WIBC says 'we're Indy's ONLY news/talk station'

Did anyone else notice this from the May 18 issue of Radio Ink --

(you can enlarge page to 100% to read the article)

quote from the article...

>How does the station distinguish itself within the market? "WIBC has so distinguished itself for news, talk, and community involvement that there is no formatic competitor. It is the only news/talk in Indianapolis."

I didn't realize WXNT was a music station.

1430 did play music, but it's been eons ago...

It was earlier this decade that 1430 had some Music of Your Life on, wasn't it?

But yeah, apparently since they moved to FM, the only dial they scan is from 87.7 to 109.7 MHz. Or if you consider WFYI to be a news-talk station, from 92.1 to 107.9 MHz

Remember, this is positioning. It doesn't have to be the truth. Puffery, pure puffery, that's all. Promotional statements and claims that express subjective rather than objective views

It's true, every outlet brags about themself, but last night when storms rolled through and multiple tornado warnings were issued, there seemed to be only one news/talk station covering the storms wall to wall, if at all.

With all the budget cuts, they are lucky the storms hit us early enougj in the evening before they turned on the automation shut the doors and turned out the lights for the weekend.

Using terms like 'ratings leader' or 'preferred' is one thing - but blatant LYING is another. There IS another news/talk station in town even if no one listens to it. It wasn't tagged as an advertisement, and it 'appeared' to be a response from a station representative - or at least that's how it was presented - so it was a knowingly false, misleading claim.

Very tacky, and makes me wonder who wrote the response. If you read the feature, it sounds more like it was written by a PR intern. But it's also obvious it wasn't an 'interview,' but a questionaire - so someone HAD to approve it before it was submitted.

I'm a fan of WIBC, but I found this to be a very amateur move.

They may have picked up some news in advance somewhere...

WXNT blew out their local news department on Friday.

Perhaps WXNT read that WIBC was the only news talk station and decided to give up? ::)
