WIBG-AM signal

I can't pick up WIBG-AM at all today here on LBI. Anyone know if they're on the air?

With their 1,900 watts they are usually one of the strongest AM signals I can receive here! (Even their 680 watts during "critical hours" usually comes in pretty well).

The WIBG AM signal has been pitiful ever since their transmitter went down a few months ago. From what i understand ,the transmitter is old and they had to try to find parts to fix the problem. The station is not even clear in Mays Landing where it used to come in very clear before the transmitter trouble. They say that the problem has been fixed, but even in Mays Landing...its sounds like the station is in New York and has that far away hissing sound in the background and the acoustics are terrible. Sometimes its sounds like they are screaming on the air. I think that they just dont want to spend the money to modernize the equipment..and they are probably right..it would probably cost a boatload of dollars to modernize the station and its only a 1900 watt daytimer...because the 50,000 watt powerhouse KDKA in Pittsburg would blow WIBG AM off the air...so there is no chance of WIBG AM becoming a full timer..like some of the daytimers now getting licensed for nightime broadcasting...anyway,my bet would be that they are not broadcasting a full 1900 watts anymore..or the old parts that they tried to patch together for the transmitter, just havent solved the problem.....i wouldnt figure that the problem will ever be solved due to the huge expense to install a brand new transmitter....

WIBG1020 AM is alive and well. Our LPB 2.5 kilowatt transmitter was damaged by
recent storms, and we are now in the process of restoring it to full 1.9 kilowatt status,
daytime and 680 watts critical hours. LPB is a company that went out of business several
years ago, and we are replacing it with a new transmitter. Thanks for your wise attention
to signal coverage and we are efforting overnight to restore it to the loudest, most effective
station in the market. In fact we are investing significant resource in both the WIBG1020
brand and the infrastructure.

How much power are you transmitting with now?

When 1020 is at full power, here in coastal/southern Ocean County, the signal is easily one of the 5 strongest on the AM dial. (Can't say the same about the 94.3 signal though, it's about 50/50 between WJLK & WIBG-FM)

The audio was distorted and overmodulated when I traveled through the Ocean City area today. The weather report is awful with the music bed overpowering the meteorologist. You could not make heads nor tails of what he was talking about.

For Those that have no Idea of what it takes to keep a station on the air.

Yes the transmitter took a Big lightning hit. so did the FM several Months ago.
On the FM It took a Lightning Hit that Blew a Hole Right through the Transmission line 2/3 of the way up…
You cannot just cut and splice a Pressurized line. It needed to be 100% replaced.
But you have to wait For what they call Insurance company approval… Finally get that.
then have to schedule a crew. the crew arrives. We start at 5pm with a tower crew and Finish up at 4am Replacing the Damaged transmission Line on the FM after a Lightning Hit.
Do you know what It takes to Run 450 feet of 1-5/8 cable up a Tower.. on a HOT humid Night working with
Hard hat mounted Lights climbing in the dark.
OK FM went back to Full Power after a few days at reduced power, But it stayed on the air.

The AM Just keeps taking Power Hits from the Power Company.
Just the Other night I was out there repaired the Tx back up to full Power got home around 3:30 am
July 4th do not know what Time… Bang It took another hit.. I spent Better than 6 hours Yesterday Repairing some Blown modules.
It will Be back up to full Power sometime today.

The Following Disclaimer and Comments is not from the ownership or management of the station just my observation of Fact

Just so you Know. I believe this is Power company related…
The Transmitter is rated to operate at 220Volts AC… the Power company has done work in the area over the past Year.
and I found that the Power at the Site is Up around 250-254 Volts.
the Transmitter transformers are Taped to their Highest limits of 244Volts..
I believe this is causing the Station owners nightmare with these Power Hits…

I may be putting too much info out here but I believe in speaking the Truth. As I am the one who is pampering this transmitter.
BTW. there are only 2 guys in the Country that
repair this type transmitter , and I am 1 of the 2..
We are currently working on upgrading the transmitter facility. Not many companies still around that make 2000watt transmitters.
Please Don't Say that the owner Does not want to get a new transmitter because its Too expensive not true , You don't know what your talking about.
