WIBX goes to FOX!

I can't believe no one has brought this up. After 73 years WIBX has dropped CBS and gone with FOX. I guess, programing wise it's a good move. Fox belongs with Beck, Rush, Savage, etc. Old timers at WIBX must be spinning in their graves.

Kind of puts an end to any pretense of "fair and balanced", doesn't it? Fox must have made them a deal that they couldn't refuse.

I know you're being snarky, but I think there's a pretty serious balance issue at most local stations. Not a right or left one, but a rather obvious tendency to treat politicians at all levels of government with kid gloves. Put simply, most interviews and news stories are more appropriately viewed as stages in the job interview process for the media people involved.

I don't think there's any question that the revolving door between government and the media impacts news coverage.

Your friend forever,
Biggus

I have generally opposed serious news/talk stations switching to FOX. I was originally outraged when Clear Channel put FOX on WHAM, WSYR, & WGY. But I have to say, after listening to FOX radio for the last few years, I have found no prejudice in their coverage. It is fast paced, probably to the advantage of younger listeners with attention deficient, but no political slant that is obvious. However, FOX News televison is a whole other story. Their use of the slogan "fair & balanced" is just a joke.
I still have to say, I am disappointed that WIBX dropped CBS for FOX, but I bet the listeners haven't even noticed.

They probably haven't... a short newscast doesn't really allow for listeners to become "attached" to the talent. One network-level anchor can read copy just as well as the next. Heard through the grapevine the switch was a corporate decision... with Townsquare and GAP recently merging together for a total of 170+ radio stations, Fox probably did offer an attractive company-wide deal, just like Fox did with Clear Channel.

Have to agree with Biggus, it's not often you see media going toe-to-toe with politicians. And that's really the media's own fault. Most journalists are paid such low salaries, they'll jump ship to become some politician's press officer in a heartbeat. And they don't want to ruin that chance by airing a story that puts a pol in a negative light. If stations paid their reporters more -- enough that they'd be comfortable staying put instead of always looking for exit strategies -- maybe they'd sharpen their teeth a little.

The Standards station in Utica might consider picking up the CBS News affiliation. Depending on the net compensation package and clearance, it would be a good upper demo fit.

Dunno, maybe WIBX has kept CBS as a secondary like WHAM did and it's not available elsewhere in the market. Otherwise, it would be a good move for Roser (WUTQ, WADR) to pick it up. Actually, I think it would be a good move for the Leatherstocking stations, WFBL etc. to pick up CBS.

WIBX would have been the only factor preventing them before, so maybe they will.

Probably a matter of waiting for their existing contract to expire before they switch. It's not worth having to keep clearing spots or paying an early termination fee with the existing news provider.

As a poster above noted, Fox Radio Newscasts are pretty much impartial, although once in a while they'll use audio gained from a TV interview.

But the newscasters on Fox are really not as good as CBS. CBS's staff: Harley Karns, Frank Settapanni, Bill Whitney, etc. all have great voices and excellent delivery. A newscaster on Fox a few days ago announced that Movie Director Sidney Loo-May had died, giving his last name a French pronunciation. But he pronounced the T at the end, Sidney Lumet.

Yes anyone can make a mistake, although he said it twice in the same newscast, at the beginning and as a reminder at the end. So nobody corrected him in those three or four minutes.

They did. WUTQ's website says they are now airing CBS news. They are, also, running more news/talk programing.
