WICC Goes Dark

Not surprising, WICC went dark yesterday evening. According to their web site the lost power (likely at their transmitter site). The station is streaming for those who have the ability to listen.

Leaving everybody with a radio in the dark it seems those without computers will have to listen elsewhere for their news and information.

Well, that generator won't run with the propane tanks THAT far away.

In a related matter, I didn't hear any word about WFIF, whose towers are in the swamp in Devon.

I got an email from Paul Thurst stating they're scheduled to return to the site today with replacement fuel tanks. Hope is that UI will restore commercial power by week's end.

Is WPKN 89.5 off the air? I can usually get it up here in Meriden but I'm hearing nothing today. Reduced power or KO'd by Sandy?

@CTListener: I'm not by a radio at the moment so I can't check, but I would see if Star and WSHU's 91.1 are on the air, as they're all on the same Booth Hill stick.

As of 3pm from where I'm at in Meriden, 91.1 and 99.9 are both on the air, but I'm getting nothing from 89.5.

With that I wonder if there's a power problem at the campus since they're near Seaside Park.

The reason WPKN is off the air is that their Generator radiator at the transmitter site at booth Hill
has a hole in it. Cox radio up date WEZN WFOX and the Studio are on generator. WPLR transmitter is running on commercial power
There is no power at Booth Hill. WSHU transmitter and studios are on generator. WNLK shared site with WFOX on generator.
WSTC stamford transmitter is also on generator. Channel 49 transmitter off the air as they do not have a generator.
WDJZ off the air no power at the transmitter. WYBC am off the air no fuel for generator.
WSHU am may still be off due to a ant problem was to be repaired to day 10/31.

In the Hartford market of what I was able to hear, the only station I know went off was WKND which came back Tuesday and for the last couple of nights has been broadcasting at its daytime power. Also, in the Springfield market, WHMP AM 1600, which goes off the air at susnet has been on all night.

Paul Thurst was kind enough to drop me a line to say that WICC went back online at 8:15am and, like WEBE, is operating on generator power. Restoration of shore power looks as far out as Tuesday or even longer.

I was pleased to notice that WFIF was on the air right after the storm, so they must not have lost power. :)

WIHS only lost power at the transmitter for about 20 minutes. Our generator kicked right in, and put us back on the air within 20 seconds! :D I am one VERY HAPPY Assistant Engineer!!! ;)
