WICC needs to fix their automation computer

From what I've been told the breaks are loaded as "hard breaks" so if things are timed incorrectly they will cut off programming.

I guess you didn't catch the hour or so of dead air on the weekend. The substitute on-air host apologized about it.

Sounds like the XDS and Simian or AudioVault (or whatever automation System they use) are having issues communicating with each other. Not a MAJOR Problem for someone who knows what their doing to fix.

I would hope that a station like WICC uses something better than Simian for their automation!
As far as I know, Clark Howard uses relays to trigger local breaks, maybe the network screwed up?

Actually, Simian handles SatAuto quite well. I have six of 'em, all talking to a BT 16.4. The receiver relays connect to the 16.4, and it sends a serial string to the Simian for every relay that is closed. The trigger set in use will determine if the Simian acts on it or ignores it. I typically turn the triggers off after the last break and put a hard break at the end of each hour to turn it off and fire the legal ID. Since the stations carry news, I also but a hard start at the bottom of the hour to put the news on. That way, if the log get out of sync for some reason, it'll catch up within 30 minutes.

Clark's clock starts at :06, has a floating break at :20 (K2 for :05 liner, then 2 min network, 3 min. local, K1 after the network spots), a hard network break at :28:50, with a K1 at 29:50 for ID/Liner, then 5:30 local, return at :35:30. Next break is a floater at :50 (K2 for :05 liner, then 2 min network, 3 min. local, K1 after the network spots) and a hard local break at 58:50 (1 min spot, :10 ID) then back to the top for 6 minutes local. Clark, unlike many major talk show hosts, actually takes the floating breaks close to their scheduled times.

I heard it breaking up for days. One day the whole program was un-listenable but what is the rush ? I do not know why they seemed on low power. I was in Milford listening on car radio and the breaking up got worse and worse so I had to convince myself it was my auto radio. No radio station would persist with that gibberish. I had a little battery operated Sony portable in car but it could not get WICC but MCA/FAN/ADS etc. So must have been on low power or my timing bad.

@JPlainJohn: Being a Cumulus station they are using Op-X, since they also own BSI. Paul Thurst's blog covered their studio remodeling project three year ago in the blog post WEBE WICC studio build out where Op-X is specifically mentioned.

@shepaug: It's gotten so bad that I don't even listen to Clark Howard on 'ICC anymore. I wait to listen to the delayed broadcast on his hometown station, Cox Radio's WSB. It's almost comical that I can pick up WSB's Atlanta signal at night much better than WICC. Then again, I believe they are now solely reliant on contract engineering services and retain no local engineers ... and sometimes it sounds like it! Scuttlebutt around has it that they aren't known for treating their staff all that well, at least according to the former staffers I personally know. I wouldn't be surprised if their former engineer left because they weren't treated with respect.

delayed---been away---

yes---750 WSB Atlanta GA has an unusual good signal up this way most the time. Otherwise not much but WBT 1110 Charlotte NC has a good signal nights also.

Without WFAN 660 WSM Nashville TN there most the time. WCBS 880 here wipes out 890 WWL New Orleans but I heard such good in NW Connecticut of recent.

Check 940. Macon,GA there most the time but only 10kw. I heard 940 Miami, Florida a couple nights GOOD but I think somebody forgot to throw some switches.

Back to subject-------------------- don't know....years ago 600 WICC was known for a dynamite signal for the area. I am not sure now. It at least seems diminished. I do not know the math.
