WICN Worcester flips the switch on new tower

I guess that they know something that WAAF doesn't....

The Stiles Hill tower site might be good for TV transmission (as witnessed by Channel 27 during the analog days). For FM reception, it's a real dog. With the addition to 97.7 from Great Blue Hill with a City Grade over Boston, WAAF really has no reason to stay at Stiles Hill anymore. They'd be better off moving back to Paxton and firing up the original facility and turn off the Stiles Hill site. They could keep it as a "warm standby" in case of any downtime (maintenance and what not). They simply screwed up. No problem. We all make mistakes. But fortunately for WAAF, Paxton is still the site of record and is still considered the licensed operation. Think about it. Congrats on WICN moving to Paxton! A WISE choice indeed!

I'm getting WICN now here in Somerville! Weak with a little static, but listenable!

Previously, I got the co-channel Christian station WSMA from Scituate, and adjacent channel splashover from WZBC.

The move to Asnebumskit hill seems to have made all the difference in the world as far as our reception goes.
If you are north I-95, and along the 495 belt, our reception is clear
I've gotten calls and email on Saturday night from people that live right off rt. 128, who are real happy to be able to hear us

I haven't tried to listen from home in North Salem, NH yet, but if I do get WICN better I know it will only be temporary. There has been a new station religious licensed for 90.5 in Derry, NH, once that comes on I think I'll loose all hope of hearing WICN from home.

I want to add to my previous reply that it would be nice if WICN could silmulcast on an HD subchannel of one of the Boston area noncom stations, perhaps a reciprocal arrangement could be made.

So, when I got home I aimed the antenna towards Worcester and tuned to 90.5. And surprise, I was getting WICN in HD (with a few HD dropouts), I had not been able to get them in HD before.

But their HD signal sounds lousy, it is very shrill (too many highs and not enough bass), and distorts badly on peaks. It sound to me like that may be feeding the pre-emphasied signal to the HD encoder rather than a flat signal.
