WIGL 93.9 is now stunting....

I tuned to 93.9 WIGL around 11:30pm tonight to find them playing a variety of songs. I heard a liner saying "WIGL FM 93.9 Winnsboro, SC". Ive heard 50 Cent "In Da Club", A3 "Woke Up This Morning" and everything ranging from country, pop, rap, standards and classic rock.

Pop or A/C oriented processing. Very clean.

With a eurospec FM head auto head unit:

Terrible terrible multipath downtown with mono/stereo blending downtown. Better in West Columbia but not great. Stereo/Mono blending until 277/I-20. VG signal as expected in Northeast and NW Burbs.

Haven't checked out South/East.

I guess that their trying to build interest and keep everyone guessing on what format they will choose to play, if they are even sure themselves yet.

It will be interesting. I really expected a better signal downtown. It's pretty much like the Class A St. Matthews except shifted from Southwest to North North East.

I was in West Columbia yesterday and scanned by it. It was a lot fuzzier there than I remembered it. So if it is going to have a worse Columbia Metro signal, why did he move it?

Maybe by the time I come to South Carolina in July all the bugs will be worked out... I am sure it will have a pretty decent signal in Kershaw County... Now back to my internet station... CC1

The FCC data base shows that he was at 1.75kw in St Matthews and 8.9kw in Winnsboro at the new location. Since rhey just got their new site up maybe their not up to full power yet.

Winnsboro site is much further from City Center than St. Matthews site was.

Possibility that Winnsboro is not up to full power. Although these days unless its a tube rig or a directional, there's no need to run it at a lower power other than at start up to make sure the antenna is matched and you don't have excessive reflected power.

After reviewing the FCC database I see the issue. The Winnsboro facility is as close as it can get to Columbia. It is deminimis shortspaced to WWNQ, WNOK, WARQ and WDRR Augusta (Martinez). The downtown signal and off to the West is going to be subject to a lot of permissible interference from the co-channel Augusta.

After going towards Pelion and Fairview (near Batesburg) the WIGL signal is almost non existant. WDRR is strong in those areas where it pretty much was before but WIGL was battling it out with WDRR. I live in West Columbia and WIGL signal was better before it moved to Winnsboro. After the move, I noticed spots of static here and there while driving and through downtown Columbia as well.

WIGL is now back to simulasting WGFG (Bad Dog) and their signal has seemed to improve in West Columbia. I'm wondering if they turned their old transmitter back on or are they now at full power in Winnsboro? This sure is confusing!

Sounds like this is a looks good on paper problem unless they wanted their target audance in Columbia and Sumter both or at least more to the northwest of Columbia than the southeast. I guess if he simaulcast with 105.3 or maybe 94.7 either of the bad dogs then it would simply be a range extention but if it is different programing then I am not sure.

I suspect they'd run it out of Orangeburg or Sumter, since he's got some overlap with a co-owned station. I am not that familiar with the main studio rules. I think the default for a single station with no overlap is main studio within the 60 dbu contour, which would mean Winnsboro or Blythewood. This is not gospel, because I have not refreshed my recollection of the rules.

Edit:

It's a Class C, so a max 40 miles from City of License.

The WIGL signal was on briefly through the Winnsboro site, but then I noticed Saturday that the signal was back to Orangeburg, as it was strong past I-95 on 26.
