WIGX 94.3

I am surprised that the new owners of the former Barnstable stations have kept the Generation X format on WIGX. It seems that most stations with this format have been flipped to something else.
Perhaps it should be offered for sale to JVC Radio, so they could use it to simulcast country WJVC 96.1 into Nassau County. Country remains a very strong format all over the region.

There is a nice interview in todays Newsday (subscription needed) with Jeff Warshaw of Connoisseur Media.
http://www.newsday.com/columnists/james-bernstein/ex-li-man-closes-on-radio-group-purchase-1.3830121

Warshaw on expanding his business states "the best way is to continue the formats his four stations now follow, which include programming for Gen-Xers as well as baby boomers. No major changes are planned."

Connoisseur is here to stay and so apparently is WIGX.

What would you change WIGX to? Is there something out there that hasn't been tried?

Let's see..... Soft AC
Smooth Jazz/Smooth AC
Country (It's been done before, but it's worth another try)
Alternative/AAA
Top 40 (compete against the CHR behemoth WBLI with a pure CHR station, not like WMJC was.)

For some odd reason, I would like to see WRCN head in the Alternative direction, similar to the new RXP, and WEHM is pretty much fills the AAA. The country hole is already filled (WJVC). Um....I think we have more than enough CHR, Soft Rock/AC stations around. Smooth Jazz would probably land on a translator before a decent power stick.

Story on radioinsight.com shows new domain, possibly for Modern Rock format. I think the folks at Airport Plaza realized how bad things were, and are prepping the ax. Keep listening for more details

That station, no matter what the format, has always had bad ratings due to it's signal. That said, I guess they saw that the 90's format was disappearing and figured that wasn't worth their time.

Good that Long Island may finally be getting a station playing contemporary rock.
Do most contemporary rock stations generally play either alternative, AAA, or active rock?
The latter appears to be the type lacking in this area, as WRXP and WXPK reach much of western Long Island.

Of course, all WBAB will have to do with their strong signal is add some occasional new tracks to their Classic Rock lineup to squash the new competition.

Independent and progressive rock.
I don't care that it was tried. LI ( Nassau and western suffolk ) needs one.
I think the 98.3 signal would be perfect

Not going to work on a commercial signal in the year 2012, sadly. Alt-rock and active rock seem to be the most likely candidate. And 98.3? Last time I checked, 98.3 was holding it's own and doing it's job (keeping WALK from getting too old and crushing b103).

Now that I think about it, I wonder if 94.3 would get more listeners if it was sold off to EMF and flipped to K-Love.

My question is this...... why are they supposedly trying rock music? You already have WBAB (Gold based AOR) having one of the best signals on LI, Q104.3 (Classic Rock) covering Nassau and Western Suffolk, New Rock 101.9 (Alternative) covering the same area as Q104.3, WPLR (AOR), and 95.9 the FOX (Classic Rock) from Connecticut. All of them have some form of rock format. WBAB does well with it's rock format already. WIGX can try, but under the current market conditions...... this may not end well.

I personally would have gone with Soft AC, similar to WFEZ in Miami. While the format is not the most profitable, if the promotions and format are done well, the station can actually get decent ratings, at least for it's signal.

I'll bite...what's the difference between "Gold based AOR" and "Classic Rock"?

Don't forget WRCN to the east of 94.3!

The latest from RadioInsight.com:

Update 8/23: Connoisseur joins the decoy domain club as it registers a few more to attempt to keep competitors guessing. Country943LI.com, Hits943LI.com, Soul943LI.com, and Sports943LI.com were added after our original report went live.

With its population, they are wise to pursue a diverse audience with this station. Gen-X could have worked, but it skewed too young with the millennial bubblegum pop they played, much of which even those who once enjoyed it have grown out of by now. Based on the domain, I'm thinking the sound will be Mainstream/Active Rock - definitely with more than the 5 or so currents played at WBAB, and more likely to play "meat and potatoes" rock acts from the last decade (Shinedown, Seether, Three Days Grace, etc.) than WRXP. It's not as crowded a field as the one that WMJC targeted, and it should be more focused than WIGX. They will attract younger listeners, as well as older ones who are tired of the tame, predictable mix that can be heard at their competition. It has the potential to work - it all depends on the execution.

If they had gone alternative before 101.9, they might have had a niche.

Looking at the Connoisseur Media corporate site, I count four stations named BOB...might they tune their Gen-Xer into a variety hits station?

-My take on those four domains

1. We already have one country station on LI. Granted, it's signal is even WORSE then that of WIGX, but we already have country.
2. They tried an Top-40 esque format already with WMJC. It flopped.
3. This could work, as a rhythmic oldies station (like KHHT in LA, or KISQ in the Bay Area)
4. Unless something gives way and one of the NY teams moves to FM, I doubt any of the major sports teams are signing up with WIGX. The Islanders already tried that, and failed.

Well, with the changes occurring at WRCN, I'm sensing that the station could go to classic rock/active rock and hire the displaced WRCN DJs.
