WIGX 94.3

RBRadioWaves said:
Well, with the changes occurring at WRCN, I'm sensing that the station could go to classic rock/active rock and hire the displaced WRCN DJs.

Well, WRCN went active rock, I think to block 94x from going rock. I think the suits at WIGX are scrambling to create a new format.

If you go go rock943li.com, you will see that the text starts with:

Welcome charlesl to Your New Virtual Private Server !

I wonder if it is just a tweak @ JVC VP for programming Charlie Lombardo, knowing that he was going to change the WRCN format, and there are no plans for changes at 94.3!

Possibly, but remember! The Gen X format is dying across the country. 94X will be dead soon, but now the chances of it going rock are low.

That's surprising, you would think Gen X would be growing as the Gen X demo becomes more and more appealing to advertisers. It's like the "oldies" station for Gen X.
I enjoyed the format of WIGX whenever I got a chance to listen to it on tropo or when I went to Long Island.

Two reasons why I think it would be a good idea for WIGX to go active rock/alternative:

1. WRCN IS NOT Active Rock! There is absolutely no new rock there. It's now 80's and 90's classic rock with a hard rock approach. Good for the East End.

2. WRCN's signal serves the East End very well, not further west.
WIGX serves West and Central Suffolk, and Eastern Nassau. Yes, there is some overlap, but WIGX reaches much more people on the island. So I hope they go with any plans for a switch to rock

There is new rock actually. I've heard bands like Cage the Elephant and Skillet a few times.

According to AllAccess, WIGX 94.3 may flip to a rock format as early as noon, today Sept 14.
The brief article provides a link to a website for 94.3 The Shark, "Everything That Rocks." That may indicate an active rock format. Clicking the Listen link brings up audio from co-owned rock station The Zone, in Billings MT.

Another "everything that rocks" station on the island? Granted, 94.3 and 103.9 WRCN serve different sections of the island. Plus 94.3 will have a distinctly different format in the Connoisseur cluster. 94-X always sounded to me like cousin of K-Joy.

Exactly what I came here to talk about! Definitely a missed opportunity if they flip to the tired and unoriginal "Everything That Rocks" format. There's plenty of untouched formats in the market. And with WGIX's limited signal coverage, they should've been going after more of a niche demo.

For the record, WRCN dropped the "Everything That Rocks" positioning two hours after their relaunch. The knuckleheads at JVC never bothered to check on licensing the positioning statement, which is owned by another broadcaster who had already licensed it to Connoisseur.

The Connoisseur guys are good. They've done sophisticated research, brought in the most prominent Rock consultancy in the business and have a very high profile PD who recently left another successful station handling programming for at least through the launch phase. This will not be a Mickey Mouse launch like the one WRCN did.

Last song: Closing Time

New call letters: WWSK

National Anthem @ noon...
followed by introduction to The Shark, with clips of typical songs played...
First song...Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

So who are the jocks?, Did they keep the same people, John Daniels has been there a while, did they keep him?
I wonder what the folks at RCN are thinking? :D

Looking at the list of songs played so far, there are some songs as recent as 2010.
But I do not see any currents. Perhaps someone that is more familiar with modern rock than myself can post whether any new tunes have been aired.

Franz Ferdinand and Nickelback are from the 2000s. Green Day is in there, but no "Oh Love" from their current release. There's no AWOLNATION, Muse, or Silversun Pickups as you would hear on 101.9.

Jon Daniels should stick around. He used to be on 98.5 when it was The Bone.

From the look of things it's more of a classic hard rock station, with songs going up to a couple of years or so ago. I definitely see songs that wouldn't be played on 101.9. For that matter, I see some songs that wouldn't even be played on 104.3.
