WIIN 780 changes format

No mas español on 780. After one year as Spanish, they have gone back to the English language as a women's talk format. I didn't think 780 was making muchos dolares con español. I'll reserve judgment as to how good or bad women's talk will be.

Women's talk format could prove to be a very positive thing for them . It's certainly an untapped resource for Jackson area radio . Besides what else you gonna do in this market ? Every other format known to broadcasting is already covered in and around Jackson !!

It just might work. Since many of the musical formats out there target women (especially AC and CHR), I'm surprised women's talk hasn't taken off. Baton Rouge had one several years ago, but it failed miserably. There was also one in Dallas that stayed on the air all of three days (the owner had no money whatsoever to operate it). Being a male, many of the things that will be discussed on these shows won't appeal to me, so it would be somewhat unfair for me to say that this format won't work. I would, however, like to get a female reader's opinion about women's talk.

Here's one to think about... how many women listen to AM radio? This format is really meant for FM stations, but you never know! How many format changes has 780 had? Anyone know for sure? I can recall:

101.7 simulcast (in the beginning)
24 / 7 CNN News
Local black talk programming
Oldies
Southern Gospel
Adult Standards
Hispanic
Women's Talk

How about Blues 780 also?

I wish they would sell that station.

Yep... I forgot about the blues format. That would make 9 different formats... unless you also want to count the times they accidently simulcast MISS 103. :)

They also simulcasted Y101 for a little while in Y's first months on the air.

One thing I think that hurts 780 is the fact that they can't stay on the air for 24 hours due to WBBM Chicago's night-time signal. But then again, it hasn't stopped WTWZ from doing as well as it does.

You forgot about the motivational tapes they used to play. It sounded like an all day Amway convention. Winners News Network I believe. Oh and the weird Miss 103 simulcast that would happened everytime 101.7 went off the air during a power outage. But that doesn't count. Apparently 780 was getting its audio from an FM radio tuned to 101.7 that would somehow retune itself to 102.9 occasionally causing Miss 103 to be heard on AM. The station has also simulcast 98.7 in the past.

Heres the best I remember.
WYAI-Simulcast of Rock 102 (later WEQZ-EZ 102)
WLRM-CNN
WIIN-Winners News (motivational hogwash) WIIN calls used to be on 98.7 when it was WIN
Black talk radio (short lived)
Oldies Radio
Solid Gospel
Blues 780-real blues (my personal all time favorite)
Solid Gospel-Southern Gospel
Memories 780-Standards
Mexican
Womens Talk

This station has a good signal but in the past has had bad technical problems mainly bad audio and going off the air for days at a time or leaving it running at night. The oldies format also had stuff we werent supposed to hear from the sattelite getting on the air such as various beeps, whistles, dead air and annoucements for the affiliates. This would go on for weeks at a time. Its no surprise they have had so many failed formats when it sometimes appears that they are not monitoring what is going on at the station. Do any of these broadcasters actually listen to their AM stations? Its like they put them on auto pilot soon forget they even exist.

The thing I liked about blues 780 was that they would play some really old 12 bar blues some dating all the way to the 78 RPM era. You could hear everything from Howling Wolf, Lightning Hopkins, and Muddy Waters all the way to the more rock based white artists like Stevie Ray Vaughn and Johnny Lang. It would have been a great station if they had not just put it on auto pilot and walked away seldom updating the playlist and keeping an eye on the audio and techincal problems. I still think it could have worked if someone at the station had cared about it.

As a former employee, I can tell you that I was extremely upset when the blues format was abandoned. I thought that Nick Vance did an excellent job with that station and I loved listening to it. Let's just say that management overheard my sarcastic tone the day it was announced in the building that it would flip, and I was told not to mention it ever again.
