WIIN 780 mess

I know this is beating a dead horse, but is anyone monitoring WIIN 780? Since christmas they have been broadcasting using an FM radio connected to the AM transmitter. The right channel is missing and many of those beatles records have wide seperation with the vocals panned hard right. Have you ever heard beatles records with no vocals and half the band missing? On top of that, The audio is a wall of distortion. They want people to listen to the FM translator, but the FM translator is so small that it only covers part of Jackson. One day I noticed that the FM was off the air, which caused white noise to be heard on AM with WDXO in Hazelhurst being heard in the background. I know that they apparently don't care about AM anymore, but how hard could it be to get a Y-adapter for the tuner and to adjust the audio?
 
Missing right or left channel audio drives me nuts, and I've heard it way more than you would imagine. IMHO, if you can't tell the difference you don't need to be operating a radio station.
 
Listen to WJQS 1400 and you'll hear the Beatles in mono, but both channels... along with a lot of other 50-60-70's songs you won't hear anywhere else in town.

I hear there's a cool Saturday morning show, as well!
 
I live in Forest and I can hear WJQS faintly during the day on the radio but I can stream them on the computer on my Tunein app and get them a little better. If you can't tune them in at night as a DX catch this is the best way to hear stations from another area. And this also applies to iheart radio as well. Ditto for itunes when you tune in the radio stations part. I sometimes listen to all news 106.7 out of Atlanta on Itunes as the only all news station in the South.
 
I love the music on WJQS 1400. They play a lot of lost oldies including music from the 50's mixed with a little classic rock and they aren't afraid to play some bubblegum as well. You might hear Donny Osmond followed by Aerosmith. Most consultants would call that a train wreck, but I happen to like it. They do have a Saturday show and a few syndicated shows, but some live jocks would be nice. 105.1 is calling themselves Jacksons ONLY oldies station. Which is not true of course. You can also hear some oldies on 87.7 as well.
As far as WIIN, that is a complete joke. who wants to hear distorted beatles with the right channel missing? I'm not an engineer, but even I could figure out how to hook up both channels and might even be able to adjust a level and get a least a little of the distortion out. I'm not sure what is wrong with it, but 780 sounded fine back when it was simulcasting 96.3, I believe it is a matter of an operator who doesn't listen to their own radio station. If some of you remember Blues 780 it also sounded the same way. Distorted with one channel missing. If i remember correctly they eventually tweeked the audio but changed the format shortly after. Every time they change the format they screw up the audio. The sad thing about it is they are wasting a pretty good signal. A few months ago I listened to 780 after losing 96.3 while headed up the Natchez Trace. Still picking it up nearly to Tupelo. It also gets out on I-20 into Lousianna pretty good. Farther than some of the FM station on a good day. Right now, it is a total waste. Shame.
 
This reminds me of when I lived in Grenada and fussed all the time about the bad audio on WABG in Greenwood. They had a decent blues format but it was completely trashy audio. Last time I was up that way, though, they'd fixed it and the station sounded pretty darn good. Maybe one day someone at WIIN will 'get it' and restore the AM to sound like it outta.

I actually donated a used processor and worked on the audio chain at WABG to get it sounding decent again. I couldn't stand the way it sounded either and knew I could do something about it.

Will add one thing more about "Flashback Saturday"(Nine till Noon) on Oldies1400AM. I refer to it as "the songs of Jackson from the 60's and 70's". I also have some snippets from on air stuff on Jackson radio from that period. Old radio commercials and pieces of airchecks from WRBC,WSLI,WWUN,WZZQ, and others that some of the old time jocks might appreciate, if no one else. Just having some fun with it. Might be a bit unusual sounding to go from Aerosmith to Anne Murray, but it was a time when there was an unusual mix of popular music out there,and Oldies 1400AM gives the listener stuff that they can't get elsewhere,and an alternative to the same 300 song cookie cutter formats.

Loved the old WRBC and Y-16 clip on Flashback Saturday. I used to listen to Y-16 a lot when I was around 12 or 13. Actually liked it better than JDX. No other station in town would play Ballroom Blitz or Martian Boogie.

Speaking of the previous post. I remember well WJDX would play the short version of "Slow Ride" by Foghat, or Led Zeppelin and then later play John Denver or even a country crossover. It seems when disco took over all of the good pop-rock and crossover stuff was forced out by too much "Ring my Bell" by Anita Ward or Sister Sledge ad nauseum. As soon as the "Disco Sucks" bumper stickers started to show up, it was the beginning of the end for AM. Most of the newer FM stations like 94TYX played very little if any disco.
 
On the subject of WABG AM: if you watch the movie "The Help" (and you should; it's great!), at the beginning of the movie, you see a shot of the WABG 3-tower xmtr site as the car goes whizzing past it.
 
The oldies on 1400 are great because of the wide variety. While not quite as wide a variety as WYAB before flipping talk and when it was on 93.1, but still a way better station than 105.1 is.
 
I remember it well. I couldn't pick it up very good at my location, but it played a wide selection. When I listened to it is was called WMGO-FM Yazoo City. Later WYAB. Off topic, but does anyone remember a Holmes Jr. college station from Goodman, down on the lower end of the FM band. I used to pick it up occasionally around Raymond when I was a student an Hinds Com College. From what I remember, they played some rather strange rock and often times it sounded like the students Jocks were the insane running the asylum. It must have gone silent, haven't heard it in years. Must have been pretty powerful to reach Raymond.

Not as wide a variety as WYAB? Sorry... gotta disagree with you. WJQS has over 3,000 songs in rotation... and they are adding more each day.

Casual Observer may have some more insight on the oldies format at WYAB, but I'm pretty confident that WJQS has more variety.

WVTH-FM 89.5 - licensed to Holmes CC. Went off in the late 90s. 89.5 is now an AFR station - WYAZ-FM, licensed to Yazoo City.

Hey all -

Thanks for dragging me into this now... WMGO-FM/WYAB 93.1 FM played 2,624 Oldies songs in its regular rotation. The difference between 3,000 and 2,624 is "de minimus" (to quote an oft-used FCC term). One thing is certain nowadays, however: WJQS has a MUCH bigger Oldies variety than WYAB.

All WJQS needs is a morning show and I heard on iTunes a sample of the Charlie Tuna Show on HyLitRadio.com. (yes I do listen to oldies stations streaming from different parts of the country). It is syndicated but would be a great morning show for WJQS to air in the morning.
