Wikipedia

I complained about a mistake in an article and was told I could correct it myself. I didn't (someone else did after my request), but I realized people might be curious about the correction. So I added historical infomration on WLYT and WKQC. I also did a brief addition to the article on WKKT. I'm afraid to edit any more of these because I don't really know that much. I feel confident enough to post details here about stations, but that's not really an accurate, authoritative history. I know on one board I saw that someone wanted to write the Wikipedia history of a certain station. There may be more people here who know lots about other stations who would be willing to do that, or to check my articles.

You did well with your articles. Expect others to come along, and correct what they perceive as grammatical innacuracies, but those will be minor edits.

The information you provide is factual, and having grown up listening to both stations, I don't believe I can add anything.

Thanks for your attempt to preserve what has been for those who haven't been there.

Thanks. I knew some of my wording and grammar might not have been quite right, but it's hard to get the wording just right.

I also updated the article on elevator music because it claimed Muzak didn't do music recorded just for them any more. I asked how to handle it if I found the information on a web site (I did) and they said paraphrasing wouldn't require me to get permission, as long as I gave a source.

I guess you have heard the story of Sinbad's demise being reported via Wikipedia. What a shame that such an open and useful tool is spoiled by those who would do such harm!

I did WLNK, if anyone wants to check it. I just did what I could remember off the top of my head, though I used the Charlotte Observer archives to check dates. I didn't include any details from the articles.

This station didn't actually switch directly from Sunny 107.9 to The Link. For a very short time (probably less than 6 months) in 1995 or 96 the station went by the name "Hits 107.9". After that, its name was changed to 107.9 The Link.

I don't normally listen to The Link. Occasionally I do listen to WBT. I've noticed that talk radio tends to run a lot more stopsets in a typical hour than would a music station. Syndicated shows notwithstanding (i.e. Rush, etc.), is this why talk radio seems to be able to afford to have live/local talent on the air for a much larger portion of the day than stations that play music can? I know it's probably a no-brainer question, but I was just wondering if that was the only factor.

Actually, I thought the short-lived "Hits 107.9" name came after the also short-lived "B-108" which came after many years as "108FM WBCY". I am thinking the station did indeed switch directly from Sunny 107.9 to "The Link". Also, the launch of "B-108" may have also come with the launch of "Bob and Sheri", or it was pretty close in there somewhere. The old mind ain't what it used to be!!!

This is what I remember:
1980 to 1981: Station was called WBCY-108 Charlotte's Best Rock
1981 to 1982: Name changed to WBCY-108 FM "The Music's JUST Right"
1983 to 1986: WBCY 108-FM (Some of their jingles said "All The Hits! WBCY")
1987: Jack Daniel became PD. He changed the name to "All Hit 108 WBCY" using Jam's Warp Factor package.
1988: Name was changed to The New B-108. This lasted a year, give or take.
December 1989: Name was changed to "107.9 Sunny FM" with call letters WBT-FM. I'm sure you know how it is when masses of people remember exactly who you are but consistently don't say your name correctly. This seems to be what happened as most people referred to the new station simply as "Sunny 107.9".
1992/93: Name was changed slightly to "Sunny 107.9". I guess they figured 'why argue with success?'
Mid 90s: Name was changed briefly to "Hits 107.9". I remember this because I remember exactly where I was working at that time and when it was.
Shortly later: Name was changed to 107.9 The Link. Ahhhh...remember those weekends when they played the top 107 songs of the 80s?

I remember the construction sounds they played before launching as 107.9 The Link. I don't remember the day, but I think it was around 5PM when Bob & Sheri and the crew came on the air to announce the change.

I worked at JP from 1990 to 2005. I was at WBT, but we were all in the same building. As I know it to be, everything above is correct.

When B-108 became Sunny in the Fall of 1989, Bob Lacey returned to radio to do the morning show solo. For the first several years, it was simply called "The Bob Lacey Morning Show." Bob was the main man, but he had a few different sidekicks along the way. Lynch ultimately came along and the show morphed into "Bob & Sheri." Syndication soon followed...

For years I had the "All Hit" sign from the "hit factory" between the current studio and the newsroom. It finally broke after moving back to NC in 2000. Ah, all those summers running the board while the jocks were out at Carowinds making extremely lewd comments about all the underage girls walking by.

I remember seeing Cynthia Clarc on the air at Carowinds in that booth. Was she making those remarks about the underage girls too???

(Sorry, I just couldn't resist! LOL)

Carowinds Studio

On one of my very early visits to Carowinds, I remember WBT broadcasting from there with H.A. Thompson at the mic--this was when BT played MUSIC. Does anyone know the time of the very LAST broadcast from the Carowinds studio and if it was 1110 WBT or one of the 107.9 formats?

Eric

I don't remember any of the 107.9 incarnations ever doing anything out of the Carowinds studio. I could be wrong, but I only remember the FM people using it when FM was WBCY (or B-108, for that matter).

By the way, the "Hit Factory" later became "The Gerry V Studio" for that short time in the mid 90's when V started his show on 99.3 WBT FM only, 3pm-6:30pm. That was an interesting time...

That room has seen a lot over the years. While working on BT's 80th anniversary, I found some old film of Grady Cole broadcasting from "Studio B."

WBT stopped broadcasting from Carowinds in 1985, the year I got to WBT. I always wanted to do the Carowinds remote, but alas I was too late. A friend of mine from the engineering department used to run the board back at the studio when Mike Collins was out there. I don't remember how long 107.9 did the Carowinds remotes after that but it was a few years. Seems like Roy Neil (aka Roy Rosen) worked out there on the weekend.

K104.7 was out there last year, but it was just T.Edward Bensen and a microphone. I think people want to see an actual radio studio with the jock actually doing something....am I right? The jock needs to be "Showcased" properly otherwise who cares? Radio is a business but it's also SHOW-Business....or maybe people don't care anymore....

Well, I never said it did, and the description is not complete.

I forgot about B-108 until I came here. However, I know for certain it wasn't a name used after Bob was hired. That is definitely when they went back to the WBT-FM call letters.

B 108 was the Rob Early in the Morning year ( I almost wrote years but that would not be the case). The last I remember the Carowinds broadcasts was when it was All Hit 108 FM WBCY. I don't think B108 even lasted long enough to make it to opening season. At one point they took all the music and spots out there and the board op just basically sat back in the hit factory. Then the guy who helped me get on there convinced them to let the board op run all

Sunny was far too bland to do anything that adventurous.

Those of you who really know the station should be adding what you know to my contribution. I just wrote what I remembered. I know I saw John Boy interviewed on TV--it must have been WBTV because that's what I watched then--and that's where he mentioned his faith and how it conflicted with some of his duties as a DJ.
