I'm Randy Wheeler Reporting. Jay Halburnt lives on.
Despite the same sound as a 1970's time warp (Wheeler still sounds like he is a 20 something year old kid in a 60(70?) something year old body and almost identical to the uptempo WGBF delivery) and being hokey at most times (Read Randy Michael's crutch list) it IS the only radio news in town.
Sounding like 1976 isn't always bad and it makes people comfortable. This isn't to say they mispronounce names, get facts wrong, or do anything wrong. They know the market. Wheeler I think sits at home and daydreams news when he isn't doing news or attending a news seminar, or something else news. After his first child was born I think the family found out ala Walter Winchell. He thinks news 24/7.
The staff is probably bigger than at least one of the TV affiliates. It is consistant and that is what people have
come to expect. God help them they day Wheeler gets too close to a news story or drives the news van into a building (Tiny R.I.P.). To their credit they haven't made changes to the news staff as many have.
So let's hear it for my buddy, "Big Larry"... But, to the guy who taught me to rip, rewrite, edit and read and the most classic station I ever worked for (an honor I will take to the end of my days).. To John A. Engelbrecht who took the time to teach me wisdom of radio while waiting to get my hair cut at Gordan Arnold's Barbershop.... To Mark Elliott, who actually thought I CAN do AC or Hot/AC... Thanks for letting me be a part of it... Glasses up for the gang at E'ville's South Central Home...
