Wild 102.9 (Reno)

I heard through the grapevine that KWYL/Reno, Nv (wild 102.9) has terminated all employees, with the exception of their morning show. I also was told that the station will go a new direction in programming as well, possibly going chr/pop. Can anybody confirm this?? What does this mean for the reno market, and competition with KWNZ?? I was told that the new operations manager is not a fan of "black music" . .Is this true???

-those are some good grapes. Everyone except Rude Boy got the ax today...leaving the station gasping for air.

-Pop it is. You know, for some who had a hand in getting that station from "The Groove", to Wild @ 93.3... to the aquisition of a bigger signal and new dial location (102.9)...I take offense to the fact that someone is gutting a masterpiece. I know ratings were OUTSTANDING, but still... it was leaving it's only competitor in the dust. I guess business is busines, but karma is karma.

-Citadel will get a sense of deja vu, when there programming alienates their hard-core listeners...and another Urban/AC comes along to cater to the masses. All those California transplants will not stand for this change, and things will be done! You don't have to be a fan of black music to know that a) it sells itself, b)the same 12 songs in a row seems to work in bigger markets nearby, and Reno is no different. The demo has changed dramitcally over the past 10 years, and that was when I was in High School.

Please observe a moment of silence for urban music in Washoe County!

I am originally from the Reno area, going to school at USF, majoring in communications, and currently have a friend who is running a station in Reno, which we'll keep anonymous, he informed me that KWYL's numbers this last book took a tremendous hit! Especially in the night show, where rhythmic numbers are typically strong. While i was visiting Reno from the bay area, I had tuned into Wild for a couple hours, prior to heading out for the evening, and honestly it sounded alot like college radio. The on air personality, did not have a "radio voice" In all actuality it sounded like he smoked four packs a day, very rough voice, and not too entertaining. I can see why the numbers suffered, having "talent" like that, and the afternoons (which I am told was horrific as well) it would be very hard to not agree with citadel's decision to "axe" everybody. One half of the morning show had been gone for a while now, The programming and station "attitude" was a joke, with such an emphasis on other geographical locations ex: "the bay area", Sacramento, Stockton, etc. instead of concentrating on KWYL's own back yard, which is the Truckee Meadows. Where does this leave KWNZ?? I do know this, they will have a huge next book. .I just would like to see them on a bigger stick. . Can somebody say 97.3??

there numbers took a hit compared to who? KWNZ... they barely showed up on the list at all. anything below a 2 is deplorable, and deserves a revoking of the FCC license. And this coming from a station that has a history of layoffs and format shakeups. Unless KWNZ gets more aggressive, they'll never reach above a 3. But yes... WILD's programming needed some improvments... although I loved the Bomb Shelter.

In market 128?, everyone on there is going to sound like college kids. It's a college town for the most part. Besides, when you pay less than 8/hour and your talent fees make up barely 5% of your gross, you get what you pay for. I'll agree that the talent pool didn't help them stay afloat...but Wild's "stick" was too strong for them to stay on the air with that format. We talked about this same scenerio earlier this year on this board!!!... I mean, you can literally hear WILD in Davis, on a good day. That's extremely valuable

There book won't change, unless they change. Thats how Reno is...(sorry Eddie Gomez)
I can't see them going BACK to 97.3...and I can't see Americom giving it back to Flynn. KWNZ had better take this opportunity and run with it... because like I said before... someone else is going to come along and exploit the Urban/Urban AC void in the Truckee Meadows eventually. I just wish I was still there to see it happen.

No disrespect, but I am under the impression that the only format Reno has ever had was "chr/rhythmic" I don't believe there has ever been a "urban" or "Urban/AC" station in Reno . . I believe an Urban station would be comparable to kjlh or kkbt in Los Angeles. Who would bring another "rythmic or Urban" station to Reno?? You can pretty much cancel out Citadel and Americom (I don't think Americom would compete against one of it's own) So, that leaves Next Media & Lotus . . I'm just simply asking your professional opinion . . I greew up listening to KWNZ, I think it would be in their best interest to seize this opportunity and run with it, perhaps going to the format that seemed to work best for them, chr/rythmic. . The same format that was implemented when they signed on to 93.7 . . .Opinion??

There has never been an Urban/Urban AC in Reno, the closest thing to was 93.7 The Groove back in 2000. For you to think that KWNZ will not bounce back is foolish. Now KWNZ will gain back the heritage if Wild goes pop, Wild will now be the underdog. The last 2 books of KWNZ being rhythmic were all up books. If you were to see KWNZ's playlist now they are very rhythmic leaning, Like KZZP in PHX. do you think KWYL will have that same delivery? Not with Sandy as GM. Thats how "reno is" R.I.P KWYL :)

Not very important, but it's not "Flynn". It's actually Flinn. I can't believe nobody in Reno ever manages to get that right, not even the RGJ.

93.7 The Groove in "2001" was close to Urban, but for those of us who worked there then...we were't really sure that Urban was the way to go? We tried as hard as we could to make it sound like the streets...for as long as we could. There were some, like myself, that wanted to make them sound like KMEL, or even KKBT. Others wanted a Wild 94.9 (SF) feel. Either way, I think we all knew it wasn't going to last... and guess what? it didn't

As for KZZP, I can see Wild going that way... and if they do, will their stick power be the deciding factor as to whether they maintain their lead over KWNZ. Kiss in PHX has a popular format, which makes me wonder why I keep hearing little birdies tell me that CC wants to take Kiss, and flip them to Spanish. (Mr. Mays, line 1)

Which poses another question... Will Citadel flip one of theirs to Spanish? I doubt it too...
