Just tonight I picked up something for a brief period called "Positive Alternative" on 98.5 while I was driving along 163 in Kearny Mesa.

Any idea if it was one of those wild e-skip things?
 
Chris, is there a 98.5 FM operational in North County yet? I'm still getting some Air 1 signal coming into Kearny Mesa. I guess that there's a new low power station on 98.5 FM that's operational but I don't know where.

Nothing but static on car radio in Tierrasanta.
 
"Positive Alternative" is Air 1's tag line. Interesting side note about Air 1.

I will check tonight David. Air 1 has a permit for 98.5 in Oceanside. The CP had the antenna on a Verizon cell tower in Carlsbad, near the airport -- and near the former KKOS 95.9 tower site. The CP for Air 1 may have moved east a bit. Stay tuned. I don't mind translators ..... however this 'company' has many far and wide across the U.S.

Update: if the translator is on, it is K253AD-FX. The tower/stick is near Lake San Marcos. The pattern throws the signal northwest.

Grant Date: December 22, 2008; so it may have been on for more than a month.

I remember KPRI used to have their main tower in that area. Could it be the same tower? Typically what does a radio station do with an abandoned tower?

Typically FM and TV stations rent tower space. It saves them a lot of paperwork with the FCC and the like. I believe that was the case with 102.1 when it transmitted from San Marcos, and in La Jolla. AMers are different because of the real estate involved on multi-tower sites.

Most cell phone companies do the same; share resources. Most cell towers have multiple carriers. They may be competitors; but a stick is a stick, and a stick is revenue for the company. There are also street lights disguised as cell towers too. Does not cost the municipality anything either.
 
I got KNX 1070 on my clock radio last night, right next to sister KRLD 1080!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its the first time I've gotten KNX inside the house, 1000 miles away from LA!
 
I picked up KNX back in 1982 while I was in Kileen, TX. It came in fairly well when it wasn't walked on by KFDI.

I did get a fantastic catch a few weeks ago. KHEY 1380 from El Paso, TX was coming in clear as a bell in Irvine, CA. At times the signal was as clear as KKOB, Albuquerque. Quite spectaular, considering they are only 500 watts at night (I E-mailed them to verify that is their nighttime power).

When I worked in Irvine, I could pick up 1360 KPOP very good at night (near John Wayne). Five miles east towards Oceanside, nuttin but multiple stations. Last December, I got WOAI from San Antonio; 880 KRVN from Lexington, Nebraska; and 1520 KTOK (former KOMA) from Oklahoma City.

Of course, your catch of 1380 from El Paso is remarkable considering the 500 watts vs the 50,000 watts and better signal of the above mentioned. I hope you get a QSL card from them.
