It's true about AM talk/news etc moving to FM, though when Laurence mentioned the 1050 in Peterborough NH disappeared--well yes technically but it popped up on 650 in Ashland. Someone a couple comments down mentions "if compelling content were on AM"--well whether or not you'd find it compelling, WBZ still traditionally does well at 1030 (though who knows if it would somehow move to FM someday, I mean beyond on an HD-2 or HD-3) and Entercom still keeps WEEI going at 850 where it's either neck and neck with Sports Hub, or 2nd place but still does well. Entercom maybe can buy another FM (who?) someday and put WEEI there or shift Mike there and move WEEI to 93.7 etc
but I don't know when that day will come.
Speaking of people feeling disenfranchised in terms of radio formats, I'm just returning from Pittsburgh where WDUQ is about to dump most of their jazz in favor of NPR news, etc. (yes yes,
you can get it on an HD radio etc. or online). I think one article in the Pitt. Tribune-Review
(the paper Teresa Heinz Kerry loves so much; being sarcastic--she told one of their reporters to
"shove it", and no I didn't get to visit the Kerry mansion in Fox Chapel PA) said that yes HD
radios could be had for as low as $25, portable or home. $40 portable maybe, but...? And the
situation in places like Calif. (rock displaces classical which displaces a college station) and RI
(alt. rock fans of one college station will get to hear WCRB on the main signal instead). Getting back to Pitt. I was talking with someone from their blues society and mentioned the WDUQ move;
she had heard of it, while the drummer for blues band we were with didn't know (it may come as a surprise to many) and all she could say about DUQ's move was "Well thank God we still have Little E's"
(which must be a jazz club or something).
Changes.
