WILD FM Stunting

the Fox 25 morning news has Mumbles Menino on this morning, live in the studio where he is whining about the stunting Entercom did last night on WILD FM. They used a computerized voice countdown clock to count down the hours till the change.

Supposedly people were calling the city of Bostom "hotline" worrying about what it meant, the FBI was contacted, Fox was comparing it to the "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast where mass panic was created by a radio play that was a bit to well done.

I will reserve comment on WILD FM's listeners IQ.

Didn't you ever think Fox 25 is making the story bigger than it is? You know, to hype the doom and gloom of potential terrorism and get bigger ratings? After all, it's FOX 25.

Well considering Mumbles history with Entercom.... the O&A 4/1 stunt, and his fav radio host Howie Carr.... the METCO gorilla....

I will shortly post a 5 minute or so sample of the stunting, from about 11:45 am today...

Other stunts I can remember:

"The Shark" 102.1 and 105.3 up in the Seacoast of NH area had a loop of things like the Jaws theme, a sound clip from the movie, and Gene Wilder from Willy Wonka singing "There's no way of knowing where on earth we are going" or something like that. A previous stunt for that station included the same kind of WILD-FM
computerized voice countdown; occasional statements like "if I said you had a beautiful body would you hold it against me" came in.

Boston's Prog Talk 1200/1430--Beatles "Revolution", Neil Young "Rockin' in a Free World"; clips from Al Franken book on tape, etc.

Star 93.7 began with continuous playing of Prince's 1999. When the change came, after the lyrics "Why does everybody have a bomb?" there was a bomb sound effect, the announcement of the new format, and The GAP Band's "You Dropped the Bomb On Me"

Man, what do you mean WILD FM's listeners IQ?

You are just confirming all of negative things that I've heard about YOU PEOPLE in Boston.

>>Supposedly people were calling the city of Bostom "hotline" worrying about what it meant,

While that is possible, it's also possible someone may have just claimed that this happened, as free publicity for the stunt...it's happened before.

Well, I gotta get back to work...Mike Adams has locked himself in the air studio and says he won't come out
till get gets the full time job. Listen, can someone alert the media on this? ::)

I remember that one. They had one stereo channel of the music on 1200 and the other on 1430, so if you were in an area where you could get both, you could use two AM radios and hear true stereo!

This is the first format change stunt I thought of when reading about the WILD changeover...............

and how about...I think 1994 when WHDH 850 (those heritage calls) ceased to be, on a Sunday night at midnight, and after the calls were mentioned for the last time the sound of a toilet flushing (supposedly
a disgruntled producer put the sound effect on) was heard. The new WEEI 850 then went into syndie sports talk. Not a stunt, I guess, but memorable.

bostonradio.org: "Friday, August 26 was the last weekday for WHDH, and on the last live program, talk host Howie Carr took to the sidewalk outside 7 Bulfinch Place to auction off the contents of the WHDH studios for charity. At midnight, August 28, the last WHDH programming came to an end, and an anonymous board operator sent the station to the history books with a recorded toilet flush."

The toilet flusher of WHDH fame is actually a person who posts on this board frequently.

I am sworn to secrecy, but the way he tells the story in person is a riot.
