WILK Election Night

I was disappointed that WILK didn't offer local coverage on election night. Now I will say I didn't listen all night, but when I did tune in it was ABC coverage. I was hoping that they would have local coverage with national updates, since I could find all I wanted on the national level on TV.
 
I agree, it was disappointing this time around. Like you I didn't listen all night, after 15-20 mins of ABC coverage I turned off the radio and switched on the television.
 
What did you expect? Nobody has a full-time department any more. Back when I was working news I remember many an election night where you would have 3 or 4 people in the newsroom until 2 or 3 am. A couple times I got sent out to election parties to get reactions from people and candidates as returns were coming in. One election in particular I was at Sherwood's party in Tunkhannock to get his comments then went directly to Kanjorski's in Nanticoke to get his, then took those directly to the newsroom. AND I got a $50 bonus from the station manager (Jim Loftus) for getting the station's mike flag on TV coverage. Those days are long gone.
 
I remember working at WILK in the late seventies during election coverage. We had field reporters calling in phoners from the courthouse and campaign headquarters. John Bugby was in the newsroom. Dr. Roy Morgan and Tony Mussari were in studio "anchors". We put on a first class program.

Best election night coverage of my career hands-down was WARM's 1996 election coverage.

That was the night Clinton won his second term, and we had him on the air LIVE for a total of five whole seconds. Rob Neyhard had scored one Hugh Rodham's cell phone number, and we talked to him in Little Rock while he was standing right next to the President.

Was also a great night in that we had people EVERYWHERE. Kanjorski was up, so was Joe McDade, who was in the middle of that big federal investigation back then.

And if THAT wasn't enough...that was the year Tom Stish jumped ship to the GOP in the state House; throwing the balance of power to the Republicans. Stish was in a HUGE battle that year, but lost.

To cap it off, we had an exclusive sit down with Governor Ridge that we actually used as FILL for the very few lulls in the coverage we had.

Best line of the night belonged to "Uncle Hard Ass," Mike Edwards. I went down to his office to brag just a bit about the Clinton thing, and he said, "So why isn't the fu**in' promo on the air yet?" Busted back down to size, I went back to work.

Everybody involved worked their collective butts off that night, and we skated rings around WILK's coverage, if only for that one time. But it's why I wanted to go to WARM in the first place.

That's where Lyra cut his teeth before moving on to ruin stations under Route 81 and now WS Media. ;D
