WILK

Other than give a house away everyday, I couldn't get it either. That's pretty amazing for an AM that doesn't fully cover the market with city-grade signal (Scranton)...nighttime pattern is bizzare. It must be due to our friends and happenings in Washington DC and TSL.

Given the "indictment of the week" news cycle we find ourselves in there is a lot of great topics up for discussion and WILK has a nice team in place to do just that at this time. Kevin and Nancy play off each other very nicely in the morning, Sue brings some local conversative points and Corbett is Corbett.

What a wierd BOOK!

Yes, WILK's numbers are the combo of the AM(s) and FM(s)

More than likely there's 1 of 3 reasons

1) Gov't scandel promotes talk radio and it's CONSTANT right now in Luzerne county
2) Constant CO-PRO from TV in newscasts and specials, especially WVIA (don't they have their own radio station to support?)
3) Bad book placement (Plus remember this is just the 12+ numbers. 1 70 year-old-man/woman could make tham look that good)

Just my honest opinion...the whole 12+ seems a fluke.

12+ not a fluke but huge numbers for the syndicated programming, Rush, Savage. Morning show, afternoons, back around 5th or so.

WILK has a huge signal...1300 is 5 KW in Hazleton; 980 is 5 KW in W Barre; and 910 is 900 watts on the Times Tower (a very good radiator) in Downtown Scranton not to mention WILK-FM 103.1 covering Scr and W Barre with 70 dBu and Carbondale and Tunkhannock with a very good 60 dBu. All the AMs have some semplance of nite power too....the Population count on these is close to a Class B FM. The argument could be made that this is the 3rd best signal in the market.

What a perfect radio storm: High local judge controversy (getting national attention), syndicated hosts (like Rush and Savage) swatting at the national presidential election, extra PR on the local PBS station, a fairly new FM signal finally being respected, local show hosts that handle the audience in an entertaining way and the only news/talk show game in NEPA. There are a lot of pluses this time around...

Someone would be wise to put sports / sports talk on an FM in the market.
If Fox or ESPN Radio is available, it might be a smart and divisive move.

Interesting how EVERY market "explains away" the odd, outrageous, or poor performance of a station.
But, if it's YOUR station that gets the bump UP ... well, that's the payoff of "hard work, innovative programming,
a fabulous PD, and a great synergy with the consultant."

A reminder of ... "You'll get NOTHING and LIKE IT!"

Birch and RAM. THAT was effective audience measurement.
Don't believe everything until every Arbitron market hops on the PPM bandwagon.

Living out of Market, and just seeing the jump had me scratching my head and elbow. I didn't know they were using so many simulcasts. Thanks for explaining that.

Times-Shamrock Now Has ESPN Radio On 96.1 FM As Well As WEJL 630 And WBAX 1240

92.1 is the prime signal for a Local (like WILK) talk/news/sports format. Some local blocks and some good satellite choices would be needed. However, it would take a couple of full time employees. Not sure Shamrock wants to add to their payroll since "all satellite" is so much cheaper.

Why is it so hard to believe the numbers for WILK? They have stations in Hazleton, WB, Scranton and a FM that covers everything else. Add to that we are in the middle of one of the greatest stories every in Luzerne County and WILK has a good staff in place to cover it. I could live without Michael Savage at night, the man is an idiot but other than that...Congrats to Nancy, Kevin, Sue, Steve and the rest of the WILK crew...

The 96.1 station I heard while driving through last weekend had a poor signal at best.
I didn't know it was coming from Scranton. It didn't sound strong enough to be considered
a local was I was passing by the central Scranton expressway. We have two ESPN radio
stations on FM here in upstate New York. Both are class A.

I listening and reading all the bows being taken my the WILK staff and if the previous post here was true that the local hours of programing were only around #5 and the reason they are number 1 is because of Limbaugh it will all seems a little disingenuous, kind of like if Scotty Pippen took credit for the Bulls championships. If the #1 ranking is across the boards then the self congratulatory comments are understandable, but if Rush, who Kevin constantly derides, carried them... then I would keep the bragging to a minimum.

Limbaugh is the dilithium crystal fueling ANY newstalk starship.
Without him, no hope of reaching warp speed.
Listening to WILK online, I'm mildly entertained.
Including the local hosts. Corbett (sp?) is an especially gifted firebomb thrower.
He substantiates with facts to accompany his artsy rage.

And, touting "We're Number One" is mickey mouse.
Demonstrate your greatness.
Don't proclaim it.
When you pop off about it, someone always questions and asks, "Oh, yeah? Who says so?"
