WILK

Depends how you slice the salami. Anybody can be #1, #2, #3, depending on what demo they are pushing, what time of day, what format. Let me give you an extreme example (and this is real): The Radio Home Visitor on WRKC came in #1 on a Birch telephone coincidental some years back. Stuff that, all you commercials. Ok, truth in advertising: The demo was "walker to straight-line," the time of day was 10:00 to noon (when we are on the air). Arbitron doesn't rank us because the RHV audience can't write a diary, much less find it. #1 in NEPA!

If you know what CAN happen - and does regularly - with diary ratings, you know that WILK hitting 10+ is quite possible. Remember WNAK showing up big sometimes? Was that because of something great they did? No....just somebody logging lots of hours in their diary.

In recent history WILK had the same type of thing happen, wasn't a 10 share, but a great book, 7 or 8 share 12+. FACT: WILK beat KRZ 18-34 at night 7-Midnite. That's ridiculous, and you know it's not reality. But there it is in "the book" in black and white. Do you know how it happened? 3 WILK diaries TOTAL for that demo in that daypart. Yes for the whole 12 week book. THREE. But 2 of them were guys who logged massive listening at night. They were low in cume but super high in TSL. THAT is how they won that daypart vs. KRZ. Not great programming, or what the hot topic was, etc. Extrapolate that out and if you get a few more of those during the week, across some dayparts, you get big ratings.

I think WILK is a decent station, and they certainly have plenty to talk about here in NEPA. So no doubt that has something to do with it. But don't OVERTHINK this. In the diary world it does NOT take a lot to make wacky stuff happen. I've looked through many many diaries in a variety of markets over the years, it's scary.

Correct-a-mundo!

It's all about who gets the diaries, where they fall, and their weighting.
Try your best and hope for the best.
You only have control of the former.

Out of the market observation: Considering what's going on in politics and the number of signals WILK has, there's likely some good reason for the big 12+ number. But 12+ can be deceiving. As a number of posters have noted, diary placement, return, weighting and in-tab can create some serious anomalies. It's Arbitron, afterall. Caveat emptor.

FACT: WILK beat KRZ 18-34 at night 7-Midnite. That's ridiculous, and you know it's not reality.

Can't be.....there aren't that many neo-nazi 55 year old men still living with Mom in the area....

And who would know better than Bernie how many middle-aged single men with issues are out there so...

usually just four or five of us at the weekly meetings....

"FACT: WILK beat KRZ 18-34 at night 7-Midnite."

So there is something to what was stated early, that their overall rating is NOT due to local programing.

In 1975 or '76, WBAX sales people told prospective buyers that they were "Number one in the 825 dialing area". (825 being one of three phone number designations for Wilkes-Barre).
In other words, they were 'number one' in about a third of Wilkes-Barre; probably the 'business district'.
(Hey, at least there was one back then!)

Times-Shamrock Now Has ESPN Radio On 96.1 FM As Well As WEJL 630 And WBAX 1240

The 96.1 station I heard while driving through last weekend had a poor signal at best.
I didn't know it was coming from Scranton. It didn't sound strong enough to be considered
a local was I was passing by the central Scranton expressway. We have two ESPN radio
stations on FM here in upstate New York. Both are class A.

The signal emanates from Wilkes-Barre, and they only run six watts.

ESPN in Scranton-Wilkes-Barre is on 100.1, WQFM, Forest City, PA now...a full Class A FM; 100.5, W263AL, Avoca; an FM translator on Bald Mtn. near Scranton with 16 watts; on 96.1, W241AZ, Clarks Summit, PA, an FM translator located at the "TV translator Site" near the Lackawanna 911 tower in Chinchilla, PA with 85 watts; on 96.1, W241BB, Wilkes-Barre, PA with 5.7 watts on Penobscot Mtn. which is currently being improved. ESPN is still on 630 and 1240 AM WEJL and WBAX.
