Will 98.5 go live & local?

Anyone know if K98.5 will go live and local or will it remain yet another station pumped in from Neptune and broadcast 40 miles away?

I fail to see how anyone can program a MANAHAWKIN station from Neptune, but Press seems to like doing that!

That's funny. It's being broadcast from an area that probably can't even receive it ;D .

That just goes to show you that Press could care less about Ocean County. When they were doing research for their new format (assuming they did research), they probably only asked people in Monmouth what type of radio format they were looking for. Never mind the fact that it would be on a signal that barely reached them.

This is what JerseyShor & I have been saying for the longest time - Monmouth & Ocean should be divided in the ratings books once and for all. They are two very different areas with stations in Monmouth that barely reach Ocean and visa versa, and usually it's Ocean that winds up overlooked by local programmers over Monmouth. Maybe if the markets were divided in some way, we wouldn't be stuck playing second banana and we might a little less format overlap over here. Instead of all of these AC, Classic Rock and Country stations, we might have something ... hmmmm ... different?

OK, enough ranting. Since they are now on 98.5 and still own the facilities on Mill Creek Road in Manahawkin which had the studio where B 98.5 was broadcast from, I don't see why K 98.5 (WKMK) couldn't use the very same facilities. Or maybe Press is just being real tight and wants to use that office as nothing more than a news and weather center.

WKMK is still completely automated? If I recall, WJRZ made the same mistake when they did the Country format a few years ago. JRZ had a satellite morning show, maybe one or two on air people, and then they were totally automated the rest of the time. I really think that if "Real" Jersey Kountry (Real Country - that's like calling Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit a real rapper) is to have any chance at surviving against WPUR, they need to go live and local 24/7 and they need to do something to stand out from their competition. That might mean spending a little money (oh, heavens to Betsy, Press - you might actually have to reach into those deep pockets!) on something besides billboards. It's going to take more than just playing "Achy Breaky Heart" to get people to tune in, guys - bring in a full time airstaff, maybe bring in some blue collar comedian to do the morning show, and maybe sponsor a rodeo inside the market sometime. Heck, maybe the cowboy bar as a cross-promotional venture wouldn't be such a bad idea when you think about it - free publicity for both the bar and the station! What do you say, guys?

First, they are soliciting an airstaff through ads on all access, so I doubt it's going to be completed automated. Why they didn't have DJ's in there to begin with... well, that's a question I can't answer.

They own facilities on Mill Creek Road, but are they capable of operating? When Nassau owned CHR, the station came out of the Princeton office. Sales were in the office off route 9, but the studio facilities were very lacking, if I recall correctly.

There's no such thing as "free" in radio, captain obvious. Especially when it's a bar.

Jim Radler is the program director for the new K98.5 FM (formerly of WXTU) They are in the process of hiring air staff and also developing their website with live streaming. Right now the station is automated and "jockless" as they draw attention to the format flip. Most stations do this or "stunt" between format flips. They almost never jump right into a new format with instant "live" programming.

I love that line.

Not too long ago, a major market station would hire an entire airstaff BEFORE launching a new format. All of the new jocks would practice in a production room for days before the new station hit the air. Now, it's throw on a computer and let it play .wav files for a couple months.
