Will 98.9 The Walk Die on Monday?

Should we be watching for a flip?

The same source who told me about Melissa Carter is also telling me this will come to fruition tomorrow:

~Scott Shannon's TOC @ 98.9. (True Oldies has really shifted over the past few years to more of a Classic Pop/Rock network, instead of "Old-time" hits (even from the 50s.) This should resemble what Atlanta's Greatest Hits was doing before they were canned last year.
~Something also happening very soon at the 97.9 translator.

Some quick observations:

--This will mean Cumulus is programming three stations targeted towards an older-than-usual audience: All News, Rock 100.5, and now True Oldies.
--This closes up one of the last remaining format holes (Classic Pop/Rock Mix), but does so on a very weak signal that will have problems reaching the target audience, which largely lives OTP.
--They're not doing this on the 97.9 signal, which IMO would be better for Classic Hits.

I think it will gain a loyal audience on 98.9 which comes in great in Gwinnett and for those with HD radio's 99.7 HD 2 Heard it happens at Noon Monday.
Welcome back True Oldies!!!

Is Adult/Variety Hits (e.g., Jack or Chuck) in the mix? Or is that too close to what TOC has become?
What other formats are being considered for 97.9?

TOC on 98.9 would fill a big hole...when you consider that the only music you hear on ATL radio from before the 90s is River, or the ever-scarcer classic rock spin on Rock100.5, or the random 80s hit on B98.5.

Unless you can pick up 103.7 Chuck FM.

Well, at first, the thinking was that Variety Hits would go on 98.9 as The Walk's replacement. Then, Cumulus wanted to find a way to make TOC available in Atlanta; which is appealing for ad-buyers. (They're also focusing on national networks at the moment- none of which exist for Adult/Variety Hits.)

I have yet to really be told what might happen at 97.9, but I know for a fact that [email protected] isn't long for this world. Consider this an invitation for people to post ideas for format possibilities at 97.9 other than Oldies.

Lance Confirms what Roddy, amlover & I have been saying: Oldies is coming.

http://radioinsight.com/blog/headlines/netgnomes/84765/oldies-to-return-to-atlanta/

The following domains have been registered by Cumulus in Atlanta:
989TrueOldiesChannel.com
TrueOldiesChannel989.com
TrueOldies989.com
Oldies989Atlanta.com

Also, Lance points out something that I've missed so far: it's been exactly a year since Project became Power, WiLD went rhythmic, 99x went active, and the Journey's pop format became current based.

Thank the LORD the WALK will be buried tomorrow, what a disaster of a format. Welcome back to the best music ever made....................

I'm hearing that it will be one hour of Cumulus' standard stunt loop- "the Wheel of Formats" at 11am, then True Oldies Channel beginning with a welcome from WPLJ's Scott Shannon- who'll host mid-days on 98.9.

Looks like the branding will be a generic "Oldies 98.9," similar to Clear Channel's standard branding for their Classic Hits stations. 2 more hours.

If Cumulus wanted to use 97.9 as another venue to serve up their own dog food off the bird, here is what's on the menu:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cumulus_Media_Networks#Satellite_formats

Best Country Today -- Obviously a nogo because it would compete with Kicks.
The Christmas Channel -- Since B98.5 ceded this last year, might this be a possibility for this year?
Classic Rock -- Since Rock100.5 has moved away from classic rock, is this a possibility?
Classic Hits (Classic hits from 1960s to 1980s) -- A newer alternative to TOC on 98.9? Note how Cumulus is using a generic "Oldies" branding for 98.9. I don't see this for 97.9, but could see it as an alternative to TOC on 98.9.
Hits & Favorites (Adult Contemporary) -- This would definitely affect Q100.
Real Country (Classic Country) -- Would this be a possibility for 97.9 that would flank rather than compete with Kicks? Would this free up Kicks to go newer? Might be a possibility if Cumulus eventually NASHes Kicks.
The Rhythm (Contemporary R&B) -- Cumulus doesn't have Cox's urban man crush.
Today's Best Hits (Hot Adult Contemporary) -- See Hits & Favorites
The Touch (Urban Adult Contemporary) -- See The Rhythm
The True Oldies Channel

Of course, Cumulus could use someone else's satellite format...Dial Global has a BM/soft AC format as well as Jack, neither of which would be that duplicative of other formats in ATL.
