Will anybody ever go out on a limb?

I've been a member of this board for a little while now and I've read the regurgitated thoughts and recycled ideas of some of you. I realize some of you run radio stations, program directors, marketing, etc. etc. etc. And my question is when will somebody go out on a limb and try something new?

Case in point. I hear rumblings that KAGM might switch back to their old KISS format ::) Really? Why? The format wasn't doing well before, hence the big move to doing FM talk. Of course they made the big talk move, but rather than make it something new they went out and hired a bunch of dinosaurs and KKOB castoffs. They were going to do KKOB better than KKOB did it. Of course it was doomed to failure. After that fell apart they went to tried and true failure "The Range" How many "Ranges" has Albuquerque had now? And now that it once again is going down the toilet the KISS thing is looking good again...

You want to hear something crazy... Some other radio station will flip and pick up "The Range" or someone will go with good old "Classic Rock" playing the same 20 songs. Why is it you folks are doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over again? Why doesn't anybody think outside the box? This town needs someone to stop playing it safe and try something new and imaginative. Might it fail? Of course it might, but it might be the next big money maker...

Or of course we call always go with The Range VII, Range IIX, Range IX, KISS III, or The Buzzard IV...

Your question might be rhetorical; but it takes mass appeal formats to get the audience numbers that translate into revenue. And pay the bills and maybe put a little coin in the owners pockets.

Sure there's lots of format options. Hungarian belly dancing music might attract a small loyal audience...but...

NM Fan, your thoughts are valid. What to program is a difficult decision. This is an over-radioed market. It seems the formula for success really is simple. Find out what people want to listen to..super serve them in that format. But in my opinion, there's not enough research into WHAT people want in a given format. The Range AGM style, is to play a wide range(sorry for the pun) of country ala "Jack". It doesn't work. Univision's version did some research, because they picked an era that researched well, and played the hits. With a very, very light sprinkling of the early, classic hits, because the audience is long gone for the very early country classics. They were doing well, and making money. Corporate dictated changes caused them to lose the format (still wondering how Recuerdo helped), and AGM tries their hand. Bringing wild back is a possibility, but with the advertising community tepid on advertising on hip-hop, that probably would be a short-lived format switch. Ed's take is also valid. You can play to a niche crowd and get listeners in that niche..but making money with it?
I don't have an answer either, just observations. I'm just a big believer in research.
Since Mr. Hutton is gone, and the new leadership is in place, I think AGM will become a formidable player in the market again. But the original point is valid. What
format(s)?

Ahhh What Format? as PD of two niche stations we don't get great ratings but we deliver for our advertisers and in the end that is all that counts. I understand that the Range brought in some nice revenue for Univision and I believe history will show that Citadeland Univisons droping of the format were not because of ratings or revenue just a change of direction.I have programed stations that have gotten strong ratings but they sales staff was lacking in ability SO what do they do they change formats, get good numbers but no sales......

I agree that AGM's range was OFF musically Rule #1 is above everything else GET the music RIGHT first example Look at ED it is an Ipod on shuffle no jocks no contests etc. The Range done right will deliver around a 2.5 to 3.2 (KAGM's first book was a 2.6) share 12+ that would put it close to the top ten and should make money.

Now what will agm do with the format, Well since I have seen ads looking for a country PD for KAGM and I have heard they have a new consultant reviewing their stations that they may stick with it But can They Get the music Right and sell it?

There is one format that I have not seen here in Albuquerque that I think will work. And one "evening show" if you will that I have seen and heard on satellite radio that I think would go over. Both would take time to develop, so it would end up being a niche type thing.

If you are seriously interested send me a message via this message board. I don't really want to throw the ideas out over the board. And no, it is not Hungarian Belly Dancing. These are legitimate ideas.
