WILL AUSTIN EVER HAVE AN URBAN AC STATION???

If the small town of Killeen can support one for all these years, and 88.7 can still be on-air after 26 years, surely Austin can support a good Urban AC station....right??? How about switching 105.9??

Arbitron says Austin has a 7.5% 12+ black population while Killeen's is 21%. That's why Killeen has an urban AC and Austin doesn't. I would argue Austin has the numbers to support some derivative of urban, but you'd have to be very careful not to slice that pie too thinly.

Yes sir...Killeen's is 21% or 275,000, but Austin's is 7.5% or 1.3 millon. Not to mention the other races that would tune in just because Austin radio doesn't offer the format as an alternative. Oh well, hopefully one day!! I won't hold my breath. Until then, since I live in Round Rock, I'll keep 103.1 KISS FM locked in...static and all...LOL!!

Thanks

Actually, Killeen (out of 112,434) 33% of the city are black. I don't know how Austin could not have a full urban AC station there when Killeen could offer one. Hopefully Austin could support one since Austin is 3 times bigger than Killeen. Hopefully 103.1 could have a simulcast signal that would cover the whole city of Austin without having to go up to at least Round Rock or Georgetown to hear the radio station. If you want to listen to the station online, you can go online to www.mykiss1031.com It is a good station to listen to. The last few months, they added a whole lot of songs that hadn't been played in a long time (as in years) Check it out. It is a really good alternative to a lot of stations you have listened to for a long while.

That's probably right. However, Arbitron doesn't use the city definition. It takes the 12+ population of the entire market, which is more than just Killeen.

Simply put, stations get advertisements based on how well they do relatively to one another in the demos their advertisers are seeking. Think of it as being like the tide. When the tide goes up, every ship on the water goes up, including your competitors' ships!
