WILL CBC START SIGNING OFF AGAIN?

I'll bet you that by the end of this year, CBC's TV stations will start signing off again due to the budget crisis affecting the Crown network. They shouldn't be on the air all night if they don't have original TV programming at that hour.

Given that there are only, what, two dozen transmitters left (if that), the cost of leaving them on overnight is probably negligible. It's probably cheaper to let them run & not worry about whether it's going to come back up at signon in the morning.

That, and if they're running the whole network from one site, there needs to be someone there all night anyway. If Vancouver's programming day ends at 1am PT... well, that's 5:30am in NL, time to bring up St. John's. Might as well run some reruns on everything in between. In any case, it's probably all on automation these days.

They usually show a movie overnights. I've seen some great movies there over the past few months late night, and they aren't that old either (Some of the Harry Potter series for example). There are also some reruns of the days programming as well.

One word: Infomercials (Why not?)

I personally wouldn't object to infomercials on CBC, but only between 1 and 5 AM. Only because it's another source of revenue for a cash-strapped network.

But I also would never allow ads on CBC Radio, ever.

I agree 100% with no ads on CBC radio, and indeed early morning is the best time for infomercials on CBC, if at all, ever.
