Will CBS cluster in STL be sold?

With Les Moonves announcing the CBS sale of 50 stations in medium markets, will KMOX finally be sold to the Booneville crowd? Some wagging tongues around 1 Memorial Dr. think so. The mormons have been eyeing the mighty KMOX for years. Also look for the privately owned company to pick up either KEZK or Y98, while the other gets sold off (ownership restrictions prevent them from keeping both because of market revenue share) to Radio One.

Im thinking a swap for Bonneville stations in Phoenix may be in the works at some point?

Just heard some info that Bonneville and CBS may be working out a deal in the coming month for a swaparoo.

CBS gets 92.3 KTAR. 620 KTAR and 98.7 KPKX in Phoenix.
Bonneville gets KEZK, KYKY and KMOX

This of course is just in the chatter stage, but its what ive been hearing.

Where did you hear this? Who is saying it?

CBS would probably sell KMOX - If they were to sell their FMs, no way that Radio One would be the buyer; this is consistently a very high billing cluster of two AC stations with a very long heritage. If someone were to buy these sticks, they'd buy them to keep them just the way they are - not a company like Radio One who would just blow them up for urban. These stations don't fit in their portfolio...

If CBS does get out of town, it will probably be in some sort of transaction with Bonneville, but I'm not sure if the FCC would let it fly because of Market Share - they would likely have to get rid of at least one of the well rated stations, and I would guess the FCC would make them get rid of at least two properties, and I think they would probably flush 101.1, being the worst of the lot, although the FCC might require them to get rid of either WIL, WARH, KEZK, or KYKY. Selling off WIL would probably make the most sense - this would allow Bonneville to create an "AC Wall" in St. Louis, virtually owning the female market in St. Louis.

I couldn't see Radio One buying WIL, but I could see either Clear Channel buying it and spinning off their Urban stations to Radio One in order to do so, or Emmis could pick it up and remain under their cap as well since they sold 104.1 to Radio One a couple of years ago.

They could still potentially own all four FM's and spin off 101. Market share, Bonneville would dominate, and they could have a strong position to fight on with how many market CC dominates with and can get away with it.

The FCC is not allowed to consider market share; that is the DOJ's responsibility. I'm not sure how easy it would be to clear the DOJ on such a deal. The Bush DOJ would probably clear the deal very easily, but they would have to get the deal done quickly. Whichever administration is next will not be nearly as lenient, and that's why there's been a rush to clear so many deals over the last couple years.

I can't see Bonneville unloading 101.1 - they have just spent major bucks upgrading the signal, and co-locating it with WIL. My guess is 101.1 would become KMOX-FM.

I know this sounds like a stupid idea, but don't rule out Tribune. Randy Micheals is at the helm of their radio division, and he loves Class 1A clear channel frequencies. He has had his eye on two of the CBS AMs since Jacor days KMOX and KDKA. Just a thought I could be wrong?

Randy is always a possibility, but Bonneville likes the market, it has a special meaning to them. If they can gain a stronger footing, there gonna find a way!
