Will CC Format Standardization Come to Columbus?

We've heard the rumors that Clear Channel is about to start doing more nationally-based programming, especially in the smaller markets.

Does anyone expect Columbus to be affected?

I sure hope so.  The sooner the better.

In any other Top 50 (and most Top 100) markets I would be a strong proponent of fully local radio, but not here.  I would love to hear my car radio blaring out stuff that gets done well (and successfully) elsewhere, yet is consistently passed over or done poorly (or on bad signals) in Columbus.  All kinds of different stuff.  Bring it on, please!  (Not that I would want to wish anyone out of a job, but I'm speaking as a listener here.)

While you're at it CC Corporate, please find some way to LMA hapless 97.1 and sinking-ship 99.7 for some of your national programming, too.  99.7 is also hapless, but alas never Hal-less.  It is irrationally forever married to Hal Fish and thus to Rock, and their latest delusional excursion is thinking Bob & Tom are going to be their savior.  They continue to cling to the fantasy that the Blitz-soaked past can be revived in some form or another, along with the ghost of Howard Stern.  They refuse to admit reality and change, like ex-child star Bette Davis in the spooky Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?  They really need your help.

To paraphrase the late, great Rodney Dangerfield, "take our big signals, please!"

CC loves nationally-based programming... also known as syndication. Columbus will probably not be affected by this... but do you see how Dave And Jimmy based out of Columbus is moving to markets all across the country now, mainly in the midwest.

Do you think D&J will become Clear Channel's new CHR morning show? Just as Valentine was...

I don't know about format standardization when it comes to music formats, but I do notice what appears to be a disturbing trend of a high number of syndicated shows and less local personalities. I'm hoping it's just a fad, like pet rocks.

In a way it already has come.
WNCI:
Dave and Jimmy in the Morning. While I realize that orriginates out of Columbus, it is still prodominantly a national show.
10-noon: local
noon-3 Seacrest beamed in from LA

This is not a fad but yet the new reality of radio and i have a feeling that you better get used to it. radio is dying from the inside out. stations are not investing in local talent anymore as most of them are cutting as much staff as possible to save on costs. it is much more cost effective to run syndicated shows as opposed to hiring GOOD local talent. it takes less time to build and owners are banking on the name recognition to build quick audiences. where as before, someone could become a radio host in hopes on making it on to TV, i believe we will start to see more of a reverse trend where TV hosts start to do couple of hours a day on the radio.

99.7 is a whole other disaster altogether. they really screwed the pooch between their morning show debacle and their format change. since stern they've been through at least 4 different morning shows including the huge cluster*uck of host swapping that happened between grego and blazor and mo. and when they do finally settle on blazor and mo they are on the air for maybe a month before flipping formats and keeping them off the air for like 2 months after that! then, not even a whole year goes by and they dump that show for bob and tom. well no wonder the ratings weren't there for blazor and mo. no one knew what the hell was going on! i do find it fascinating that Hal Fish is still employed there. 99.7 has been in a constant downward slope ever since Stern was taken off the air 3 years ago. Who gets to keep their job after 3 years of sinking ratings and questionable decisions like that?

99.7 had the chance to do so much... but Hal is a rocker and as long as he is there, it will remain Rock. After The Blitz, The Rock should have never entered. It's simple enough... flip it to CHR, Urban/Rhythmic, Rhythmic AC, or even an AC type of station and let it do what it had to do. The Rock doesn't even sound like a money maker. It's still early, they need to dump rock and be smart.

Now on the subject of CC... WNCI has pretty much become what we were afraid of, a syndicated CHR. Dave And Jimmy is here in Columbus and does cater to the Columbus area... it would be silly to dump them as they are making WNCI money. Ryan Seacrest's show is alright but it's not going anywhere. It's cheap but WNCI should have stayed local.... this is one of Clear Channel's biggest and heritage CHR's... turning it into small market cookie-cutter is stupid. But welcome to Cheap Channel.

My question still remains: Will Dave And Jimmy become CC's next big hit?

Anyone have a read on how D&J are faring in their syndication markets?

WHAT??????
Morning Zoo, Joe Boxer, Chris Davis, Maxwell ALL HERE in Columbus. Weekend air staff members Matt, Marty, Kevin, Chase and Heather ALL HERE in Columbus. Ryan Seacrest does a syndicated show and THAT makes WNCI a "non local" station????????????
Amazing.

WNCI and WCOL are very local compaired to other clear channel stations in other clusters..Even 105.7 and 93.3 and 106.7 are very local compaired to others, while they all might not always be LIVE they tend to use local talent over WANcasted talent via the Nexgen network Clear Channel has.

If I am not mistaken outside of Ryan Seacrest and overnights and some weekend shifts WNCI is very live and local. WCOL is very local too, last I checked Johnboy is here in Columbus and not some product of
San Antonio.

Per reports coming out of the current big CC managers meeting in Texas, extensive programming standardization will soon be very much the rule.  While I hate to see this for other markets, and don't like to see it for NCI, COL and TVN, it provides a glimmer of hope that something worthwhile will finally make it to the smaller local CC stations, and ESPECIALLY to 93.3 (fingers crossed bigtime on that one).

SCRATCH THOSE COMMENTS.

I was jumping to some incorrect conclusions.  I now see that the new plan pretty much boils down to more syndication.  Not good, so I regret my uninformed endorsement of CC's plan as it might relate to Columbus (although any dig at 93.3's choice of format is always thoroughly-deserved).

P.S. I actually like a lot of the CC air talent (even at 93.3), and don't like the possibility of folks losing their jobs, especially in this awful economy.

Oh my gosh! Nu Roo. Did you just make an "I hate 93.3" comment? So unlike you! :p

Might be more Columbus talent being regionally syndicated. Though it didn't seem to work the best with the Buckeye Country network, where the idea was to voicetrack all of the stations from WCOL.

Not all of the Buckeye Country themed stations where voicetracked from WCOL. I know WMRN-FM in Marion at the time had a WCOL jock or two and at the time had Danny Wright from WGAR in Cleveland.

The whole Buckeye Country thing was more of a Jacor thing than Clear Channel, WCOL was the first to 'drop' the slogan.

Looks like WMRN-FM and WCHO-FM are the only two left using the slogan... 102 in NW Ohio went back to 'T-102" WCKY dropped the slogan so did WGAR.

If they want to have all Premier Radio talkers on their stations then will Randi Rhodes make an appearance? Since she joined Premier Radio lineup of loudmouth braggers?

What about on 1230 AM? I doubt she will make it on WTVN.
