Will Google Out Me Out Of Work

The new Box arrived today at our station. Rainbow logos abound. I guess someone somewhere (a production house sweat shop?) will be making commercials that are auto loaded into our automation software. Paging Mr. Smith...Mr. Winston Smith please forefit your right to make a living...

What about local? All done by Google Radio?

Is Google the next "Big Brother" of radio? (yes I know CCU still owns over 700 stations...for now).

You're right..I hear thay pay 10-20 bucks a spot

If your subject line is an indication of your copywriting skills, yes.

Otherwise, they're a goldmine of potential new customers. Simply redo that spot that they paid $10-$20 for, take it to the customer, and sell them a spot worth putting on the radio.

Is it just me, or are Google's demo spots lame? My "average" work has far more punch, and creativity than ANYTHING I heard on their demos, which I would assume is their best!

We haven't had them on for a year, but all they had at that time was dry reads, along the lines of your typical PI spots. 3 or 4 of those in a row would be toxic.

Since all Google does is fill unsold inventory, I suggest that you step up your game to make better spots/campaigns that your salesfolk can sell more frequently. That will benefit the station's sound AND bottom line.

I'm listening to some of their demos. http://www.google.com/adwords/audioads/ads.html

Bluefishtshirts.com is good
Conservativebuys.com is good until the last 5 seconds ... bed gets too loud
Heck, even YouGetFreeCredit.com is a two person spot. Sounds at least as good as that stuff from the Famous Radio Ranch (they're OK, but all of their spots sound exactly alike).

I didn't want to be mean KenKay and SirRoxalot, but geez...."will Google out me out of work"? LOL! If that's how radio people write, then we all deserve to be unemployed...NOW!

Google outed me out of work. I flatly denied everything, even brought in several emergency girlfriends. Got my job back but, jeez, how did they know? And why did they care??

I think this is the old DMarc deal where they outfit stations with equipment and load in spots overnight to fill unsold slots? I did stuff when it was DMarc and it was a WHALE of a lot more profitable than that 10-20 bucks thing. Google may be doing a lot of PI and semi-PI 800 number things..but it seems mostly barter anyway. Those don't sound like trainfuls of cash money coming in the door..It not only could be a great way to "elaborate" on the national and local spots done..it might be a great way to get leads. Find out who these clients are and bowl them over with better production and sizzle..bet the CLIENT isn't paying 10-20 bucks. You can bet that Google is charging them for production and it isn't a paltry sum for "national commercial production".

FWIW we were asked to be one of Google's "Audio Production Vendors" way before this all started up and filled out thier questionerre..never heard a word back from them. The guys name there is Andrew Poon for those that would like to get on this thing.

I only listened to 3 spots, but from those that I heard, they were just reads with beds. A monkey with cymbals could do that. Do clients really want their stuff to sound like that all the time? Like Board op said, they all sound the same. Since it's cheap and weak sounding, I could see Clear Channel doing that.

LOL All!! :D

Sir, Mike and Kent Thanks for responding. As a former On-Air Guy I'm used to getting only one shot with my words. So much for proofreading. As it turns out I type like I ride a Microphone. There is no going back when I say something stupid on-air, and now there's no going back when I make a typo (FYI: I was hoping to write "Will Google PUT me out of work"). ;D

At least I didn't write "will google in me out of work"...That would have been really dumb.

Okay, apologies aside.

After staying up last night to listen to the google spots I realize that for now this is no threat to my job (I do Prod for a four station cluster in small market). We still do mostly local stuff and since the local buisnesses are getting ads for FREE with me on salary they won't likely go to google. If anything is going to put me out of work it's that seven station cluster in New England that advertised a position available:

Prod. Director
7 Stations
24k plus remote appearances (another 3k)

Yikes... Is that really where we want to go??? My creditors will take that 24k and raise me to the top of the closest flagpole...rendering me...out of buisness.

Don't worry. Google will only out you out of work if you post to one of the gay message boards using your real name.

And that joke, my friend, is another example of why they don't let me on the radio anymore. ;)

Quality commands it's price; don't sweat it.

To Out It Another Way...

Hawk, thanks for the explanation. I never would have figured out what your original intention was. At first, I thought that one of our friends from across the pond with a limited knowledge of English - or a bad translation program - was posting.

Remember, you're like the two guys running from the bear. You don't have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun the other guy. It sounds like that shouldn't be too much of a problem with low quality Google spots.

Yep, it's the same as old DMarc Barter spots. Most of the stuff they run in my area is along the lines of 'Target & Response' 800 number ads. Nothing spectacular, but then I also know there are worse things to fill dead space with like those poorly written PSA-type spots that come in piles and are supposed to be 30's, but never seem to be.

Of course, I'd love to have paying spots filling up all the breaks, but in reality, and as an overworked production guy, I don't mind some of it being handled Google. Talk to me again once the other studios in my building are back up and running, and people can record outside of my prod studio/office, and I might feel a little different!

DOes that system work any better than it used to?
