Will Houston ever get full HD upgrade?

KUHF comes in great with the full HD power, will the rest of the stations ever upgrade to full? It sure would be nice!

It's doubtful, The cost of the equipment to move from 1-10% along with the loss of 10% of there analog power and that as of yet it makes no extra money for them will discourage the change. It also doesn't help that the number of HD receivers out there is almost nil.

I came across an old ad sent to our station in the 80s attempting to sell us on AM Stereo, reading it you could have interchanged HD Radio and released it tomorrow. As sad as it will be, HD is going to die a agonising death unless the government or car manufacturers get behind it in a big way.

When I can get it I enjoy listening to Hot 957 HD-2. It'd be great if there was more HD choices out there instead of smooth Jazz

I think it will depend entirely on whether HD can be monetized or not, either by selling ads on HD2 and HD3 channels or by selling data services. I can tell you that a study has already been done to see exactly what it would take to upgrade the Senior Road Tower, which is the main transmission facility for KKBQ, KTBZ, KKHH, KHMX, KBXX, KODA, KILT, KLOL and KRBE.

I predict HD will have it's own hall in the Museum of Broadcast Failures, near the AM stereo and FM quadraphonic wings.

What is this new kind of AM noise they keep calling HD Radio, anyway?

That would be great if they did upgrade to Full HD Then I could leave the HD on, on my radio instead of having it disabled most of the time.

It would certainly help you receive Houston HD better. If I remember correctly from your previous posts, you live somewhere in the middle of nowhere south of Austin.

I live about 30 miles from Austin, but have a place out in Lavaca county, about 85 miles west of Houston. I can pull in KUHF HD very good with their full HD-signal.

No wonder KUHF is much more susceptible to multipath these days on my Sony SRF-M37W. It never did that just a few weeks ago!

I would rather have FM quadraphonic instead of HD. Someone needs to bring it back, particularly in cars.

KUHF has been running high power on HD since 2009. They were one of the stations that tested HD power levels for the FCC before the rules were changed. It's not like they're doing anything different than "just a few weeks ago."

Unless their HD signal had problems at some point or another...

How dare you tamp down some enthusiastic HD bashing with hard facts!

The hard facts are that the FM broadcast community should have done what TV did, and set a sunset date on analog FM. Clean off the FM band or start over in another part of the spectrum. But, the already marginal broadcasters, scared of losing revenue, didn't have the guts to ride that wave out. And, the weak-kneed politicians didn't have the guts to mandate it. So, now, we have this hodgepodge of analog plus HD that isn't doing the listeners or the broadcasters any good.

Meanwhile, in Europe, HD is doing well in another part of the spectrum. But, we had to be different. So, the already mediocre broadcasters are getting even more mediocrity.

Not that this tangent is even close to being on topic, but it's certainly working out well for the TV broadcasters isn't it? The Commission has already grabbed part of their spectrum and sold it to the highest bidder, and there's near constant talk of them coming back for more.

Obviously, the DTV upgrade brought about huge increases in revenue for TV broadcasters too, right? All the transmitters, antennas, cameras, switchers, STLs, etc. they've had to buy to make this transition have more than paid for themselves with new found revenue, right? Uh huh...

DAB HD is doing "well" in one European country - the UK - and its market penetration is still quite small there. All the big stations, like 106.2 Heart and 95.8 Capital FM are still broadcasting on analog FM and there are no plans to stop.

On the other hand, I read an article a while back about the DAB transmitters in Canada being mothballed and that DAB broadcasting there has effectively ceased in favor of HD Radio.
