Will Howie Carr Leave WRKO Early After All?

D

D. R. Tucker

Jeff Keating, at WGBH's Greater Boston blog (I can't believe that show actually has a blog), claims "...There’s some speculation that Carr might agree to return to WRKO in full force if the station waives the last 2 or 3 years from Carr’s 5-year contract."

http://blog.greaterboston.tv/?p=146

I can't see Entercom actually agreeing to this, can you? It would seem to me that they'd want to hold him to the terms of the June '02 contract he signed--and that, if the contract's "right-to-match" clause allowed the agreement to be extended for the same number of years as the agreement he received from a competitor, they'd want him to be on the air for the exact same number of years, i.e., until 2012. I just can't buy this one.

Who knows if this is true--not sure of where the rumor comes from. Emily R. is no longer working for
Howie's desired station...aren't 'GBH's new studios within shouting distance of the sneaker building though?
Maybe he dropped a dime on his way in to negotiations...

As I mentioned in other posts, expect Howie to use either the Herald or others to drop a dime on WRKO/Entercom.

If Greater Media is the allegedly-pregnant-while-walking-down-the-aisle Cathy/Submit, does that make WRKO the first-wife-(sharon, is it?)-that-won't-let-go? Eye Say!? To think Howie did better in a divorce with his first wife than he is doing with Entercom!

Greater Media - pregnant with Howie's seed and waiting! Can they make it down the aisle...

Don't blame the messenger. Howie made his bed, literally. And don't be so sanctimonious, Chrish, Howie has said, insinuated and done a lot worse than what is presented in the last posting. His ignorance when it comes to sensitive issues of race and sexual orientation just one fact that quickly comes to mind.

I'll likely end up throwing Howie under the bus to spite Entercom. I like Howie, but I hate Entercom more. So I'll refrain from listening and happily contribute to continued poor ratings at the Hindenburg of Boston radio.

"[WRKO] is holding a contract that has held up in court. Why would they waive 3 years of it so Howie can then go on a competing station?...The only thing [WRKO] should be waving for Howie is a lawsuit over his head. The legal fees for them won’t even merit a footnote in their financial statements. For Howie, it’s bankruptcy."

Check out the podcast of Greater Boston: Beat the Press on Ch. 2 (linked below) Howie’s situation was talked about...
(Emily Rooney, Joe Sciacca, Dan Kennedy, et al). We see Howie's lawyer--who kinda looks like
John DePetro!

Discussed on BTP: Is Howie
a “beaten man” or does this just prove how valuable he
is? Is it possible that Entercom felt NO amount of money
would justify them making a deal with Greater Media to
let him jump to 96.9? Is he morning guy at ‘RKO or
back to afternoons? Just how much money has Greater
Media lost in all this (though it got them some free
publicity)? And is Imus heading back to 96.9?

At first I thought it was just a publicity stunt for Howie. Look at all the press he has gotten and just like in Cigarette sales or the Clinton Campaign, for Howie there is no bad press. However this has dragged on too long. Someone please buy out the contract and be done with it. At least it should go to binding arbitration or something.

There will be NO arbitration, and you know why? Because Entercom Boston's lawyer is George Regan, who was a Kevin Deluxe guy, and we all know how much Mayor Deluxe and Howie Carr love each other, right? Anyway, to paraphrase Howie, Mayor Deluxe now has Alzheimer's - probably the Irish version where Mayor Deluxe has forgotten everything except his grudge with Howie.

Let's see, with two fewer music choices until the New Year and Howie gone (maybe, maybe not - you'll find out sooner than I will today b/c I'm working until 6), that leaves WZLX, WEEI (the racist D&C-wannabes from the "Big Show") and Jay Severin as the most to gain....perhaps Howie if, as his secretary Jessica hinted, he's back today. (Have Jessica replace Sandy, she's cuter! ;D )

Maybe, George had his advances rejected by Howie ?

Casablanca, whatever your personal problem with Regan, it nullifies your otherwise on-target posts about Howie and the contract. You can do what you wish, however, you are giving your detractors ammo when some of us actually enjoy your posts. Try to chill on the personal attacks on non-radio people. This is a public service announcement...

I'm sure this will come as a surprize to both Entercom and Regan.

Jeepers, the things you learn on these boards. Would be nice if more of them were true, though.

Regards,
TSB

Regan is a PR maven. He works for Entercom, but is not a lawyer. I forget the name of Entercom's outside counsel...something like Burns/Levenson maybe? They have been quoted in some of the articles.
