I was surprised how many times Steve Slayton referred to "the changes on the FM dial" on Friday. He reiterated, over and over, that he did not anticipate any changes to KZOK. I am a big fan of Slayton, as are a lot of people. I have no doubt that the Infinity station with the lowest ratings would be at greatest risk for such a change. The question for KZOK is whether or not they are doing enough, outside of the Bob Rivers show, to maintain their classic rock status. I think they are. Even though a lot of stations play classic rock, KZOK does it better than other stations. There is an appreciation on 102.5 of music that never seems to be paralleled by other stations, and they should hold their own as a result.
The big risk with Leykis is altering a format when his regular contract ends in April, 2007. Would another station want to take a chance on a show, or a format change overall, when the talk show that is most prized only offers a guarantee of being around for fifteen months at the most? If FREE FM were to happen here, it had better happen pretty quickly. Odds are Entercom will hang onto Leykis, playing him from 10-2 until the ratings for Miles and Thrill come out. He will move into their spot in a heartbeat if the ratings don't justify playing Tom on tape delay.
