Will Jazz Become The New Dance?

It seems like while dance is sneaking it's way back in, Jazz is quietly failing across the U.S. Will Jazz fans be the next to experience what Dance fans have had to put up with for some time now?

Hmmmm... and imagine - what if it comes back and starts dominating the charts? Then someone comes out saying "Jazz is making a come back!!!"... "2019 is going to be the BIG year for Jazz!!!" Then we get Lil Wayne, David Guetta, Cascada and everyone "turning jazz" as CHR Jazz stations and Jazz remix shows start popping up....

Could it happen?

Last time I checked, there were more smooth jazz stations than dance stations.
I don't think Jazz songs will make it on the CHR charts, it's never happened in my life. This isn't the 1920s.
The demographics of jazz listeners are about a generation older than dance listeners. Hence, the demographic as a whole has a higher income, which makes jazz a more attractive format for advertisers and non-commercial listener supported stations. We only have one (and almost had another) listener supported dance station.

You must really be young Nick if jazz songs haven't hit the CHR chart in your life. "Songbird" by Kenny G was a big CHR hit in 1987. He had a few minor crossover hits that made the top 40 after that. I know many people cringe at the idea of calling Kenny G jazz. He's not one of my favorites but technically he is a jazz artist.

A jazz crossover that I did love was "Rain Forest" by Paul Hardcastle from 1985. I would guess some dance fans would enjoy that song if they heard it. It is synth based and has an ambient sound. Another good one was "Rise" by Herb Alpert which I also believe hit the disco chart in 1979.

Let's not forget, a couple dance tracks have used "jazz" in their blend. "Baker Street" was sampled by Michael Mind, and "Infinity" from Guru Josh Project also has a jazz sample.

I could imagine someone redoing or reusing the beat and melody of Paul Hardcastle's song. If so, hopefully all vocal singing and not rapping. I don't mind a short rap verse near the mid or mid to end section, but no hotel room service or in the ayer type activity!

I remember really being used to enjoying this, but not knowing what it was some years back. I also remember when WVEE played it in the morning as I got ready for Jr High School. Listening today, I think this song would sound good if mixed into "the funky beat" by Connie. Maybe one day I might do it. ...Then after that maybe I can play 3oh!3!!

.....alright enough of that - let me get back to being serious now.
