WILL K-Rock flip to Smooth Jazz?

Los Angeles doesn't have 4 triple-A stations. They have one triple-A (the Sound), two mainstream alternatives (KROQ and KYSR, if that makes sense), and an indie-alternative station (Indie 103.1). LA could probably do without KYSR playing its generic alternative playlist.

In the past LA had 931. KNX, 101.9 Triple AAA and 103.1 Triple AAA. What I'm saying is that the Triple A format failed in LA 3 times and Bonneville isn't afraid to try a format that failed in LA before. There is a chance another company will try a smooth jazz station in New York. The company that returns smooth jazz to New York may be suckers.

You mean blow up a legendary heritage rocker that everyone's heard of for a dying and even lower revenue producing format?

After the mess with JACK FM?
You guys are funny...

Outside of Stern , WXRK never really had GREAT ratings.
In fact, the ratings were always pretty close to what JACK did.

WIth that said, its not flipping to anything anytime soon.
Tierney is going to get his shot at it, and O&A are staying put.

CBS is almost definitely going to stick with K-Rock at least until the first book or two in PPM. If they can pull decent numbers with the new methodology and do well in the young male demos, then K-Rock is going nowhere. It's pretty clear that's CBS Radio's strategy right now.

CD 101.9's demos were at the very high end of the 25-54 demo and much of it had aged out into 55-64. The 2007 revenue figures for 101.9 were pretty paltry as well. Emmis made a move for a younger demo and a shot at stealing some of Q104.3's success and perhaps even running K-Rock out of town. Even with the low initial numbers, they are definitely hanging on for PPM as well and probably banking on improved numbers once it's rolled out.

As for CD 101.9 and Chill....there's no way the station went under because of the short-lived tweak to the chill format. I don't recall their numbers dropping at all. In fact, they may have been wise to stick with chill and actually promote it (which they really didn't)...they may have been able to grab some younger listeners and keep the station afloat with decent numbers. Instead they went back to the tried and true format until the demos just aged out of what they were looking for and the revenue dried up.

In fact, I would argue that the fact that the PPM's have been rock-friendly in Philadelphia (where there are four rock stations, all doing well) as well as Houston, was what triggered 92.3 flipping back to rock in the first place.

Exactly. Free FM had to go, but I don't think they would have gambled with bringing K-Rock back if they didn't see a chance for better returns from the PPM.

No, K-Rock will not flip to Smooth Jazz, only we will do is put the syndicated programming called "Adventures of Smooth Jazz" on 107.5 WBLS starting Sunday at 7PM right after Caribbean Feva and Quiet Storn will keep Mon.-Fri. at 7PM of all-time right after "The Wendy Williams Experience".

There have been rumors that CBS wants to do a Smooth Jazz station in New York. With K-Rocks low ratings CBS could flip KRock to Smooth Jazz. Smooth Jazz is returning to Denver later this month. Bostons Adult Hits station is also flipping to Smooth Jazz. Even though New York, Washington,DC and Houston lost their Smooth Jazz stations that doesn't mean that the format is dead. New York has a diverse enough audience for a Smooth Jazz station if done right.

Sorry to dissapoint you, but Jazz fans don't lack for a station in the New York market. They have WBGO from Newark, a legend among jazz enthusiasts. Trust me, no one is crying over losing CD 101.9.

I heard a rumor Z-100 was going to switch to Beautiful Music! Trust me - it's comming soon. I can't tell you where I heard it, but it's from a highly placed source at Clear Channel...why do you think they moved out of NJ? It's all part of the plan.
