Will KHJ, KFRC, WWKB, WHBQ, WCFL, CKLW, & other stations follow?

Since WABC & WLS had their Rewinds on the Memorial Day weekend, will other classic top 40 stations like KHJ (spanish), KFWB, KFRC (Family Radio), WKBW, WCFL (now at another frequency in Chicago), CKLW, WHBQ, KOL, KJR, WAKY, WKLO, WFUN, WQAM, WQXI, WAYS, KXOK, WHB, WHK, WKYC, KILT, KLIF, KIMN (now at another frequency in Denver) & others follow in the future on certain Memorial Days? What's your opinion on that?

My guess is no. WLS has a unique history of being a huge top40 that could be heard in about 40 states. Plus, 'LS still uses their basic jingle theme even with their news/talk format. I think they are the exception here, but I'm hoping I'm wrong.

In the case of KFRC I doubt it if it is Family Radio, because they're probably anti-rock.

The WCFL call letters are used by an FM CCM station that doesn't cover all of the Chicago area, so I doubt if they would do anything, but could WMVP, the ESPN Radio station currently at AM 1000 possibly do it?

I've linked this thread to the Memphis board for a response about WHBQ. Some of their former people are on that board. As a former WHBQ listener I'd love to see it happen.

The feature was great for WABC and WLS; significantly the same demos as the talk format, and a way to avoid the holiday lack of interest in talk as shown by the PPM. In other words, a good promotion for the main format and a way to experiment with new ways to program for the PPM in the future. Few of the other nostalgic calls of the 60's are on the same frequency or in the right format for such an endeavor. It's key to be able to promote such a feature to your existing audience base... n/t is about the only format that lends itself to this.

CKLW did "The Big 8 Reunion" on a Saturday night a few years ago. I'd love to hear a full day of The Big 8 again. It's probably online somewhere. I think there have been WAKY reunions, not neccesarily on WAKY.

IMHO this is where the internet can fill a void. Assuming the RIAA copyright issue thing gets cleared up - and internet radio can continue as it is - how about some enterprising individuals set up streaming "recreations" of these legendary Top 40 stations. I'm sure former jocks and PDs would be happy to donate old airchecks. With digital editing programs, you could, for instance, have an aircheck of a dj from such a station talking up a song. When he hits the post(or whatever) you can fade out the aircheck and fade in to the rest of the actual song(and play it to it's conclusion). Also, old jingles, promos and commercials could be easily added as seperate MP3s. All of these stations already have tribute sites. How about tribute streams - a 24/7 tribute to when Top Radio was really something.

WOWO should do this next Memorial Day (or Labor Day). It would fit nicely to bring back the old jocks (and longtime morning host from the 60s through the 80s Bob Sievers still does their top-of-the-hour IDs). The list is endless, Carol Ford, Terry Morgan, Listo Fisher, John Cigna..).

I agree with you.

Considering how they dumped the oldies format not too long ago ( and rather suddenly at that ), I have serious doubts that we will ever hear music again on Buffalo's WWKB ( WKBW ) anytime soon.

Denver's KIMN, this becomes interesting. Yes, KIMN is now MIX 100 ( 100.3 ), but their sister station is KXKL Kool 105 and that is Denver's oldies station. And considering that other than the legal ID at the top of the hour, one never hears the KIMN calls on 100.3, Denver's Kool 105 could very easily do a KIMN weekend ( or something like that ) if Kool 105 wanted to.

Newport News/Norfolk's WGH is still around. Still on 1310 AM. However today WGH is ESPN Radio. They could do it as well but then again, holiday weekends are weekends full of sports as are most weekends in general so the odds are next to zero for us to hear WGH doing what WABC or WLS did.

Richmond, Virginia's WLEE-AM is still around as well, though not on 1480 as it was back in their top 40 days. Even though I doubt they will be bring back the good ole days , their main competitor back in the 70s WRVQ-FM Q-94, could very well do it. In fact I think they have in the past. I know they did back in the summer of 1987 when WRVQ celebrated their 15 anniversary. 2007 marks 25 years of Q-94, so maybe something is in the works there.

Baltimore's former Big 60 WCAO is religious now. Dittos with Washington's ( OK Morningside ) WPGC-AM. Can't see them donng it. WPGC-FM? Being a big urban station as it is,ah..not gonna happen.

KHJ is a long time Spanish language outlet (5000 watts) that would have no interest in going English for a few hours on the weekend.

Radio Reunion

A few years back, then-oldies WHTT FM in Buffalo did a Radio Reunion with jocks from WKBW, WYSL, WPhd, WWOL, WNIA, and other stations from back-in-the-day. The gathering of former "competitors" led to a lot of great radio war stories, and pulled back the curtain on a lot of wizardry from the "good old days". WHTT Program Director Tom Schuh originally tried to schedule 3 or 4 guys for a couple of hours of music & stories, but it soon degenerated into 10-15 guys gathered around a conference table full of mics for a free-wheeling discussion that even non-radio geeks found fascinating.

It might be an idea that WLS or others could borrow.

If you have an XM Radio or DirecTV, their 60s on 6 channel recreates an old top 40 AM every Friday afternoon and they're quite a good listen. Tomorrow they're doing WMCA.

Not considering their current formats

KFRC is now on FM with classic hits plus Oakland A's baseball. The AM was sold to a religious broadcaster in 2005 and has the call letters KEAR.

KB and CKLW are talk. WHBQ is sports as are 1000 in Chicago and 950 in Denver.

WGH is country on FM, sports on AM. WCAO went A/C around '79, country in '82 and gospel in '91. WPGC is R&B/hip-hop on FM, gospel on AM.

WOWO is talk and also is no longer 50 kw at night.
