Will KYOT Be The Last Smooth Jazz Standing?

tick..tick..tick...tick...tick...tick...tick

WBAP NewsTalk 8~Twenty (50kw) now simulcasts on co-owned rimshotter 96~Seven in DFW. Meanwhile back in the desert, KFWhyEye withers on Ancient Modulation while a co-owned non-rimshot is playing Kenny G. in the equipment rack right down the hall.

You mean that Melissa and Tony might be......voicetracked?

Doc,

Do you have a vested interest in moving KFWhyEye to 95.5?

We've got plenty of tawkers in Fenix (which seem to generate lots of negative vibes among the R-I faithful).

Meantime, The Ky-OH-tay delivers a unique product (and getting more unique every week it seems) which is appreciated by its audience. Fortunately, 95.5 seems to be generating enough revenue to keep the talking wolves at bay.

Let's hope it lasts until J.D. Blowhard loses to McCain and resumes his personal destruction of KFWhyEye.

Nurse Jeff and I urged the Clear Channel suits to pre-empt TMISU's decision to move KT'R to FM at least two months before Hip Hop died on 92~Three and Pat McBland babbled on about being in both the left and right speakers! That was over three years ago, too. Vested, no. Nehru jackets, yes!

I'm not quite sure why KYOT hasn't at least mixed it up a little and gone Jazz, World, Rhythm, and Chill like Blu 102.9 in Santa Fe...

simple...they want ratings! But the Nurse and I haven't changed our minds about the highest and best use of 95~Five.

No ratings, no billing. That is certainly a station I would want to emulate.

I wasn't looking for smarta$$ comments, but thanks Johndavis and DavidEduardo. It was only a suggestion. Surely I've never worked in your field before, but I also wasn't born yesterday. There are champions and there are innovators. Champions don't usually reign forever. You guys are really great at taking risks. Long live radio! LOL...

Let's put it this way: I worked at KZON back when it was Mike Jorgenson's personal jukebox and we ran TV spots saying it was "12 in a row that you don't know." It was a blast to work there, and we had a small but loyal base.

Eclectic, niche formats are fun to produce and they make a small number of people very happy. They also do a lousy job of paying the bills. The moment that we had debt to service, even Mike Jorgenson said play the hits.

Everybody says they want variety and they want more than the same old songs. But you have to be careful how you read that statement. People want a variety of songs that they know. Play something unfamiliar and the public will ask why you're playing a bunch of weird music. Some genres of music are best suited for a weekly specialty show and not 24/7.

I cringed the first time we played Gino Vanelli on "Smooth Jazz 95.5 KYOT" and I gave Nick Francis grief over it. But he was right to play it. It's not up to us to define the format... it's up to the audience. We can't shove our favorites down the public's throat. We have to figure out what the audience wants and deliver it.

So, back to my original comment: if Chill and World Music is what the people in Santa Fe want and it generates enough revenue to pay the bills, then good for them. But having seen the difference between musical adventure (the "Smooth Rhythms" phase of KYOT) and mass appeal (the "Smooth Jazz" format it evolved to), I've seen that movie a couple of times and I know how it ends. Stations that are too hip for the room don't survive.

Today I had a chance to listen to KYOT for 30 mins uninterruped by anything and I must say I enjoyed it. My gym has a new infrared sauna and the station of choice inside it was KYOT. So I am laying down chillin in 140 degree temps and loving the musical selection. In the thirty mins I only heard three instrumentals and I reconzied most of the songs. Nice job Coyote ;-)

Looks like it as the May numbers don't look encouraging for Smooth Jazz. We'll say it until they do it -put KFWhyEye on 95~Five for the following reasons: 1) there aint no future on AM; 2) look at the demos KT'R is pulling by being on FM; 3) look at the demos KFWhyEye is stuck with simply because they're on AM; 4) there isn't anything else you can put on 95~Five that will generate revenue in the first 90 days; 5) this will shut up the Buckeye Boyz and leave them with only Lumberyard 14~Forty to rag on!

Rush Radio could be coming to the Valley! If KFWhyEye does indeed become Rush Radio 95.5, CC will likely pull Glenn Beck from KT'R. :)

Good take em.. I think he is so out of place at 92.3

I will say though I have not really cared for KFYI in quite some time but I do enjoy hearing Sharpe man while heading back from the gym in the morning. Once his show is done, I am done with KFYI

No way Jose that KTAR-FM will be getting rid of Glenn Beck any time soon. Sorry.

....how 'bout KFWhyEye tradin' Michael Savage and a great AM signal for Beck? Think of it: Sports Parking Lots 5~Fifty & 6~Twenty. Of course the deal's off if they don't kick smooooooooth jazz off 95~Five and replace it with Rush Radio ;)

It could happen. Back in Feburary, CC took Rush Limbaugh away from Beantown's powerhouse news/talker WRKO 6~Eighty (owned by Entercom) and put it on their Rush Radio 12~Hundred WXKS. CC could take Glenn away from KT'R is they want to!

'RKO gave him up, he wasn't taken away. Having Limbaugh on the Boston yakker distracted from their otherwise all-convicted-felons-and-involuntary-contractees format.

Wherever CC flipped a station to Rush Radio, the format was built around Premiere's Big 3: Beck, Rush & Sean. If CC flips KYOT to Rush Radio, it's highly unlikely Beck stays on KTAR.

Rush stations in the Eastern Time Zone (specifically Boston & Raleigh-Durham, NC) run the Big 3 live starting with Beck from 9 AM-12 N, Rush 12 N - 3 PM then Sean 3 PM - 6 PM. AM drive is live and local. The time difference in AZ would create some scheduling issues, but if CC wants Rush Radio on 95.5 they'll work that out. :)
