WILL KYSR MAKE UP THEIR MIND?

Earlier today I heard a station ID and their new? tagline "SoCal's New Alternative". Just a few days ago, I was hearing more modern AC songs. Now they appear to be leaning alternative and more male friendly again, playing the new Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters songs in heavier rotation. Can they make up their mind?

It seems to me that any drop in ratings would be due to a complete lack of focus at this station. I don't know if they're trying to straddle the fence and hit both KROQ and Jack, but it comes across as unprofessional.

Admittedly, when they are on their game, and focused on new music, I think they sound better than KROQ. You just can't count on that consistency, though....

I've been monitoring the KYSR playlist for the past few weeks and they've added around 3-4 songs in those few past weeks. The playlist has remained the same. KYSR is horrible, how could they ever call themselves "So Cal's New Alternative"??? KROQ is adding at least 5-7 times more music than they are. Whenever they do add a new song, they either drop the song and never play it again or just overplay it and keep it in the playlist for months. Example: Spaceman by The Killers: #3 on the playlist, added December 9th, 2008. What's up with that???
KYSR has never really "broken" any new music. They always copied with KROQ was doing and adding but it seems that that has ended. I'm a huge Alternative Rock fan, and in my opinion (not as a radio nerd, but as a music and radio listener), KYSR just sucks. No new music, more commercials than KROQ and all the DJs sound and act like ******bags. Josh tries to sound like a badass (while playing artists like The La's and Jason Mraz) and that he doesn't really want to be there. Kade always sounds like he's hung over. Trever Trent just sounds like another typical weekend jock filling in for the midday spot and Kennedy barely talks enough in her "morning show" that I can even judge her. KYSR is a mess!

LOL! You should've heard the conversation I had with Josh regarding Coachella tickets (happened in April of this year)...it went from that to somehow talking s*** about Indie 103.1 and Danny Masterson! The guy and the station is a joke, CC evidently doesn't care about this station, and they don't have any idea what to do with this station.

Will anyone be able to record the new KYSR station ID so I can listen to it without actually listening to the station? HAHAHAHAHA

This is what qualifies as "new music" on 98.7 from the playlists for "The New Music Show" hosted by Josh.

Weezer, Pearl Jam, Killers, Coldplay, Green Day, Paramore, Switchfoot, Afi?
On the NEW MUSIC show!?

That's pretty sad and it's obviously being programmed for him, and he is the MUSIC DIRECTOR! Josh must be hating life.
If he wants to talk trash on Indie 103.1 he should just have a seat and realize has no credibility
in the area of new music.

When I was an avid 98-7 listener, I emailed him concerning the "New Music Show" and the lack of actual new music and he responded that the reason why he wasn't playing a good amount of new artists was because people weren't emailing him what to play. Some of sort of music director he is, I know he has a show called the Adventure Club that used to be on 98-7 and still runs on the The Edge in Dallas, wonder why 98-7 dropped it...

What's the point of Kennedy being there if there if she only talks for 4 minutes, once an hour? Then the other guy Darren? Trevor? Forgot his name, comes on and talks the rest of the time! One a few occasions that "98-7 new music jingle" comes on, and they'll play some song that is nothing close to new...once I remember Josh coming on after the jingle saying "I lied, this isn't new". One thing I will give credit to 98.7 for is whenever I go inside the Fox Hills Mall or any mall, with my Walkman, that is the only station that doesn't go out....actually Indie never wen't out neither...

Seems like cc is screwing up a good station its a shame i love the true alt format at least we have kroq.Gen x radio coming soon hope not.90s radio seems to be a up and coming thing hope not here it has a shelf life of just 4 years at best i would hope people have learned from all 80s formats they lasted to long way to long and such bad chr music from the 80s at least chr was better in the nines

Meanwhile, CC's Channel 92.3 in the Bay Area manages to be a true alternative station. But what music director relies on email suggestions to program a new music show?

In defense of the MD and the "email suggestions" I'm guessing something has been lost in translation.
My guess is that the MD has little power over the music picks and that the PD is making him play the less than great music.
I think he is suggesting that if more people requested the other better music he might have a better case to make to the pd.
That's a guess.

Radio is all about research and surveying now. It's about what a majority of the audience wants to hear. I'm sure more research is put out for KYSR than Channel 92.3, therefore Channel 92.3 can get away with more. If KYSR changed their branding to Channel 98*7, dropped some DJs, added in Commercial Free Mondays, and tweaked their playlist to what Channel 92.3 is doing, they might regain a lead over KROQ.

Nah, they just need to stop playing girlie music. If you're gonna broadcast to "Rockaholics, then friggen rock.

Kinda wonder if the PD at 98.7 is just getting lazy... people are right here... a lot of the currents are the same as last spring. Is there no new music this fall? It's kinda disappointing... I was liking their approach because I'm not much of a fan of the harder stuff.

We all know that there's plenty of "new music this fall" in Alternative and Adult Alternative. Just don't bother expecting to hear much on SoCal radio. Playlists in those two genres are dreadful in L.A.

Most of the day they're playing 2-3 recurrents (as in songs from the '90's and earlier) in a row. Whatever happened to the balancing act? We're going into a new decade, you know!

"Recurrents" are songs that are too new to be gold / library cuts. In many formats, that means they are 6 months to maybe 2 years old. A CHR might be tighter, an AC might consider 3 years to be a recurrent. Recurrents are kept separate from gold as they serve the purpose of maintaining a slightly fresher sound by controlled play.

Some stations even have two recurrent categories, a power and a regular... the idea being that the categories are stairsteps down from heavier current rotations so songs can ease out, rather than drop nearly out of sight as gold.

Adult alternative tends to be a 35+ format, predominantly. As such, the amount of currents is going to be quite limited.
