I know this is the last thing on most people mind , but this being a radio board.....

Most of my moms side of the family are new orleans, chalmette, slidell residents, and like many are planning to relocate permanantly to places like here in Lafayette, Shreveport, and even as far away as Dallas.

I know the city will never be the same, and im just curious how you guys familiar with the N.O. Radio landscape think it will do.????

Just a week ago we were discussing stuff like citadels new 100.3 and 106.1, amazing how a few days can change things forever.

Many stations will simply go dark (or are already), turn in their licenses, collect whatever insurance they can, or try to move to nearby markets. New Orleans will not be a top 100 market for the forseeable future.

Wow...that's scary to think...perhaps the damage is worse than I think...do you folks down there think NOLA will loose its top 50 (or even top 100) ranking?

*shutters* my God, I wish you all the best

I think that it is very possible. I heard on the news tonight that New Orleans may not be inhabitable for years (they were talking 3-5 years!). Some people may never call the city home again.<P ID="signature">______________

I wouldn't panic about this yet, but it'll be interesting to see what all the major broadacsters will do when NOLA dries out.

Except for stations with a large reach, such as WWL, NO stations may have few people living within their coverage area. No few business with the means (or need) to advertise. No listeners, no revenue - it does not look good.

i can see there being a few stations on as information for reconstruction efforts, similar to what they did with an nyc signal suring the s&r and efforts at the wtc site.

I work for a staffing agency here in Houston and we've had a few people from New Orleans come in looking for work. Alot of these people are here to stay if not for a while.

I saw on a TV employee web site that Belo (WWL-TV) is giving every employee $1,000 cash right now. I heard WDSU-TV employees are also getting cash from Hearst-Argyle.

Here in Florida, my company gave every employee $500 cash last year to help everyone through the hurricanes in our area.

But I agree, it is going to be very interesting to see what happens to those NOLA stations. Nothing like this has ever happened to the broadcast industry.

Sure, I would see WWL stay on....it would be sad to see most of the landscape go the way of the Dodo. Surprised, as desperate as things are, that no one has commandered (sp?) a smaller station just to broadcast the plight of the common man.

If the bottom truly falls out, would most operators try and rebuild there in a few years, and the NOLA radio landscape changes with mostly Mom and Poppers? COULD IT HAPPEN???

I applaud the companies that are thinking of their employees to give them money for living expenses right now. I wonder what will happen with Fox 8 employees as the station I beleive is trying to be sold... Also does the Belo offer include WUPL employees too? (considering Belo is trying to buy 54?)

But on the other question...will New Orleans loose a lot of people? Yeah, but a lot of others will stay... However Look for Baton Rouge to go up in ratings numbers according to The Times Picayune as most New Orleans residents are moving to Baton Rouge and the outlying areas (such as Houma/Thibodaux and Hammond which are still considered part of the NOLA Arbitrons for TV)

I'm in the Bayou area and we have 15 stations licensed to the area (Houma/Thibodaux DMA which usually is St. Mary,Lafourche,Terrebonne, and Assumption Parish) ..with most limited in coverage area or aimed more at New Orleans.
(The ones I'm calling are:
640 KTIB Thibodaux (off air due to "financial" and technical concerns)
1390 KFMV Franklin (limited area coverage of Franklin)
1430 KMRC Morgan City (spotlight broadcasting Cajun limited to east St. Mary)
1490 KJIN Houma (Guaranty broadcast sports here with coverage of Houma basically)
1600 KLEB Golden Meadow (Coastal's only station broadcasting Cajun to South Lafourche only)

91.5 KNSU Thibodaux (Modern rock..college station limited to Thibodaux)
94.3 WTIX Galliano (only in COL, broadcasting oldies to NOLA..tower in Plaq)
95.3 KQKI Bayou Vista (country with signal that covers left half of tri-parish)
96.7 KBZZ Morgan City (Soft Rock that covers middle (most populated)part of DMA)
100.3 KLRZ Larose (Cajun, sold to Citadel, future ?)
104.1 KHEV Houma (CC station only in COL, station is gospel aimed at NOLA)
105.5 KDDK Franklin (Nostalgia, only covers western St. Mary)
105.9 KBZE Berwick (Urban, basically covers east St. Mary and northern portions of Lafourche,Terrebonne and southern portions of Assumption)
106.3 KXOR Thibodaux (Classic Rock, covers middle part of DMA)
107.5 KCIL Houma (Country covering most of central and eastern part of local DMA)

The New Orleans market provided the broadcasting entertainment for this area (as well as most of Baton rouge and a portion of Lafayette).. Look for the stations in a worse case senario to move to the Bayou area and Baton Rouge market for those that can move (the ones that can't can be downgraded) but only one I see in trouble would be 94.3 and 104.5 with Hot 104.5 being the one I pick to hand it in (unless someone buys the license on fire sale and moves the station to the Bayou (as it can't move north due to WNXX Jackson,Louisiana and 104.1 licensed to Houma but the CP was originally for Grand Isle)

But it is expected for New Orleans to stay at least in the top 100 no matter what..But Top 50 market? Probably not , But Look for two high 60's IMO and an 80 from South Louisiana in about 5 years in the arbitron (unless Houma/thibodaux is fianlly granted a arbitron/Nielson number)

And the estimates on Baton Rouge are from a NOLA.com/Times Picayune article:

In what way? Most of the smaller stations in the area are either off the air due to water at the transmitter/Damage or is controlled by one of the major corporations (the one exception is Dowdy's 94.9 that just moved to Metarie and his transmitter is off and KLRZ hasn't been taken over by Citadel yet (so it's still transmitting from Larose)

As far as I can figure, on the south shore, there are 4 stations off the air completely (others please correct if I'm wrong)
WTIX 94.3
KNOU 104.5
KKND 106.7
KAGY 1510

All 4 have their transmitters in the hardest hit areas (94.3/104.5/1510 are in Plaqumines Parish, 106.7 was on eastern end of St.Benard and would have had the eye come over it)

Plaq and St.Benard are off limits as well as St.John and St.James at last report from WWL-TV (and would explain 94.9 being off the air..no one can transmit to tower and no one can get to tower possibly)

I say they will try to rebuild as everything is here and most of the problems are just water related if I understand (even though a lot of the transmitters were/are in Chalmette (St.Benard Parish) which got hit even harder than New Orleans)..In worse case senario, I'd look for them to move to west/north of City and still cover like before.... Why give up a top 100 rated area (that even after the rebuild ,will be a tourist attraction)?

Is Magic 101.9 on the air?

Remember they are switching transmitters apparently around to conserve

But as of 1:40pm Saturday Sept. 3:

apparently only WQUE 93.3 and WLMG 101.9 on FM
WWL 870 and WSMB 1350 on am

But I have caught a signal this mornign at 590AM that is relaying the storm information from the Entercon/CC broadcast in BR and coming in pretty clear from my location (but radio-locator shows no records for a 590 within 200 miles of New Orleans)

On a side note: KTLN 90.5 which relays WWNO 89.9 from UNO is apparently on but has no programming on it right now

In Baton Rouge, I'm catching most of the stations right now with half in regular broadcast mode, half in Hurricane mode still on FM (I didn't check AM)

At 4pm, I'm now catching WDVW 92.3 relaying info from Citadel Baton Rouge and a dead carrier on KHEV 104.1 which should both be getting power now since the tower is 40 miles from New Orleans is a cane field near Vacherie,La. as well as those listed above

The only guess I have on the 590 signal may be WVOG off frequency..But 1010 WCKW-am is on the air with releigious from garyville, and 800 WSHO is apparently on with a hum out of the transmitter (I catch a loud hum on 800 which I've never had before)

Can't confirm or deny but I caught a signal on 1580am at same time... Possibly could be Pascagoula,Mississippi?

I'm in Pensacola, on the fringe of WWL 870's daytime coverage area. I can listen to a local 100kw FM simulcast of WWL on WYOK 104.1 out of Mobile. I have also picked up the simulcast on 590. I just assumed that it was comming from WDIZ Panama City, but I haven't heard any ID. The simulcast on WYOK and 590 are both delayed several minutes.

What other non- New Orleans area stations are simulcasting WWL?
