Will News/Talk Fly on FM 101.9?

In NYC I doubt it? Too much over saturation on AM. Oh, maybe you want to compete with Sirius/XM talk channels or how about internet talk like Republic Broadcast Network? Man do I miss the late Terry Anderson. Programming and Formats get duller by the second on NY FM radio. If Merlin wanted to grab a spot and make a real splash they should take over 50s, 60s, and 70s music which is totally missing in NYC. With a playlist of 60,000+ songs (Not the boring CBS-FM same 300 hits rotation) they could do some real damage. Putting a mix of WINS refugees and WABC/WOR/WNYM/WWRL type talk shows won't put a dent in the NY FM band. Disco 102 had it going on and since then they never made any more sparks. They keep bringing in out of towners and consultants that don't know jack about the NY audience. Here we go again folks! LOL

Have to agree with you on that, talk belongs on AM!1010 wins is the best news outlet, and it would be the only thing I'd miss if I moved away from the city of NY.Theres nothing like it and dont think twice about switching to Am to listen. What do they think will happen?Free FM and the other dud that landed on 102.7 didnt make it,I wonder why they think it will work again.Classic Hip hop like Sirius's BAckspin channel or a Jamz station would have been a better fit for NYC.I think they will regret this decision when the money doesnt come pouring in.The other thing is they just alienated the alternative rock audience for a 3rd time since WLIR 92.7,WAXQ went classic rock,K-rock switched back and forth a few times, people arent too happy.Hope WAXQ goes back to alternative or at least plays some.

@Jelly Beans: Before we even find out what format 101.9 is going to be, let's not be so fast as to compare them to the now-defunct talk formats on 92.3 and 102.7. I have a feeling what we will expect from Randy & Co. is going to be much, much different than those two FM talk attempts...

@Ejxit: I think we should give WQCD credit for some success on 101.9, being that's been around for many years. I wouldn't go so far back as "Disco 102" to look for positive credibility, lol!

WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

The home page of Radio-Info states there is "chatter" that WRXP will ultimately go to some form of news/talk that is aimed primarily at women. It states that new owner Merlin Media's new executive Walter Sabo has "wanted to try for years" such a format.
David Hinckley in the Daily News also indicates it may be oriented to females between 30 and 40.
If the info. is correct, does this seem like a sensible strategy?

Re: WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

So whe get topics about fashion and make-up and lifestyle? I think this isn't gonna work. Wait and see.

Re: WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

FAIL!

It's cume and overall PPM will be lower than RXP this time next year.

Re: WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

I kinda liked Blink 102.7, at least on a trip passing through NYC once. They played music.

Traditional mass-appeal pop music used to include the gals' tastes, too, not exclude them or treat them as though they were issued separate currency. And a lot of the gals' music was good. It had a good beat and you could watch girls to it.

That said (and at the risk of offending some people) : The call letters WPMS are available. Radio-locator lists '0' results for a WPMS search.

Soccer moms? 30-40? Yeah, sure.
Hardly. Let's try soccer grandmoms as the base for such a format nowadays.

Well, at least there's something other than the Rapture making 2011's radio news.

Re: WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

They're definitely aiming for women. They're paying SUPER nice too...

Sounds like "Blink" without the music. ::)

That's what I was thinking. Look how well that turned out.

And I agree with TheWitch. It's one thing for New York to be without a country station for so long, but no commercial new rock outlet in any form? Absolutely embarrassing.

And sorry to sound sexist, but how many mainly female-targeted stations do we need?

Re: WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

Yes! They pay real nice too! Yes! You're right! Right until the first 6 months of the PPM come out! But good luck anyway! Randy, Walter and company just might lose their collective shirts on this one!

Re: WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

We Had an all Female Talk Station In Dallas once
Called Cafe 990
Lasted 3 days.

Re: WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

How would you do it?

Most issues these days cross gender lines in terms of their impact--when you're talking about issues that affect working people, well, most women work like most men work so everything from labor issues to taxes to infrastructure to education have no gender, but impact everyone.

The only spoken word programming that I know of that skews strongly one way or another goes like this; sports and right-wing talk skew strongly male, while discussions of relationships or of entertainment-related topics skew female. Anything else in the spoken word realm (NPR programming, streight news, or nonpartisan talk) tends to come out within a couple of points either side of an even split. Hey, that's what Arbitron tells us about radio and Nielsen tells us about TV. So you have to respect that...and if you are trying for something other than a roughly 50-50 mix you need to steer your emphasis that way. A female-skewing talk station will be heavy on relationship discussions or E! style programming...maybe that's what they'll do, and if it is, it'll be a cross between Blink without the music and Bill Ballance-style talk shows brought up to date. Maybe Wendy Williams back on radio?

Re: WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

My guess is that any female lean in a news oriented station will be subtle enough that many men could still find it interesting. Given the serious news people known to have been hired, this should in no way be an entertainment or gossip type of format.
For example, WPLJ does not sound particularly female oriented, even if it is designed to pull in more female listeners.

I remember back in the early 70's 101.9 then WPIX had birdies in the FM multiplex signal. It was a real garbage can. Disco 102 cleaned it up and when it went Jazz the only place I ever heard it was in my Dentist office.

Although I prefer the current format I may have continued to listen if it was a regular news talk station. When I am up on Orange county I prefer to listen to talk on FM 99.3? I think rather than WABC.
But this women oriented news/talk format, forget it, I'm out and I expect the format to be a huge failure, far worse than the 102.7 and 92.3 talk failures.

Re: WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

We all saw how Blink 102.7 and Free Fm lasted

And again a bunch of out of town fools think there gonna make money on MILF's that are already hooked on DR. Phil, Dr. Oz, The View, Housewives of NY, NJ, Atlanta, Beverly Hills, Orange county, Washington D.C., Miami, Mob Wives, OWN network, etc. Women want visual action and are not going to be lured to FM for News/Talk for any great length of time. They already use their tv's for background noise. I hope all those who jumped ship from WINS and WCBS all have good contracts that pay even if this silly experiment fails.
