You have got to be kidding me, right? Not only is it offensive, but it is completely reversing the progress African Americans have worked so hard to make in this country over the past 60 years and I find that outright shameful. Where are the morals in this "culture" you speak of, cause they sure aren't in the music.

If hip-hop lyrics are actually just a reflection of hip-hop fans and culture that would indicate that that world is full of loose women, murdering men and drug dealers. Maybe that's why some rap pioneers are calling for the end of the hip-hop culture as it exists now. Hip-hop music sales are dropping and no new superstars seem to appearing in that genre. Movie directors like Quentin Tarantino do no good with their ultra violent films. It's good to see the public is rejecting his latest gore fest. HBO and other cable outlets have been brainwashing kids with extreme violence for over 20 years now. Should it be a surprise that we now have out of control crime and violence? Hip-hop lyrics are part of the vile brew that's helped our society fall to the level it has.

Look at the crime stats in Indy.

Most murders are not white on black or black on white. Black on Black murders are the biggest on the yearly death toll.

Abortions of black babies amount to genocide of the african american race. 400,000 each year and 70% are reported to be african american.

Ministers USED to have WHHH playing the non violent and non offensive lyrics. (The clean version) This changed when Radio one took over.

Is what they are doing HELPING the community? murders in indy and when I say indy I mean the HOOD are on a huge upswing.

The Carmel and Lebanon murders are the exception and not the norm. Dead black man at 38th and pick the cross street either in a drive by or in the trunk of a car is business as usual, unfortunately.

Make the changes to the lyrics, play the cleaned up version.

The SNL parody of Sharpton and Jackson is to DIE FOR because it brings the truth to the table. Sharpton at least made a killing on Imus.

BTW - The only person ahrmed by Imus was the governor of New Jersey. If only Imus hadn't apologized. Okay - that hasn't been brought out in the media. You take it for what it's worth.

I still like Amos and this he has a handle on the community and needs to assert his foot in the Indy cluster. I RESPECT Amos brown and Amos Brown is a man of integrity.

As a commercial broadcaster, Radio One has no choice but to play the uncensored version of these songs. Because that is the version the kids have on their Walkmans and iPods...and if the lyrics change, they notice, and make (more) fun of the radio station (than they do anyway - if you have teenage kids, listen to them critique your imaging. ;) Then again, I really have to laugh at the imaging I create because it is the farthest thing from the truth for me.)

That doesn't address whether the music should be produced in the first place.

Hearing the music doesn't bother me, but then again, I'm not exactly a bastion of the "hip-hop culture". Ok, I'd rather listen to Hot 96.3 to KLove.

MH/Chief Eng of Indy... You said it best... ;) We all have the right to say or record or yell in the well, anything we want... BUT, there is responsibility with every action in a free speech society... Imus paid the price, but I was suprised it took this long, as he was a knocking 'in jest', alot of subculture and portions of our society... It's funny he really was let go over the ad dollars bailing on the show, not directly for his comments... We all were playing edits of songs, back into the late sixties, even though our lp's, 8-tracks and cassettes had the unedited stuff (Steve Miller's 'Jet Airliner', example...Pink Floyd's 'Money'...Big Brother & Holding Company's 'Piece Of My Heart')... Yet, our ratings didn't suffer... It was an act of responsibility and what the fallout would be, if we did.. Some pushed it to super edit and then some pushed it to the unedited... I still have to watch well meaning aritists that deal with lyrical issues that need to be heard by my 15 to 30 age group, but yet, be carefull not to let one word slip through that would be in poor taste with a large portion of my listenership and support base... Blue October's 'Hate Me' deals with the very serious issue of suicide and hopelessness! Our audience deals with that topic through direct confrontation with depression or friends going through it.. Christian and non-Chrisitian young people (in our case) deal with alot of 'same issue' situations in today's culture... I took the long version and did a special edit of a word that was just too 'out there' for a large part of our audience and (also for FCC tastes before the evening hours)... I NEVER HEARD ONE COMPLAINT from anyone for the lack of it in the content..Of course the mainstream AOR / New Rock outlets were playing an edit and shorter version that actually took out some of the pain I wanted the kids to hear...The phone message from the mom and such.... We are 'out there' as an LPFM taking a 'Willow Creek' approach to lifestyle.... But, I still remember edits that made perfect sense in my earlier top-40 days... 8)

Thank you to Chris and everyone who contributed to this thread. Used it for my show-our listeners don't think it's all Offensive-especially the Rock Yo Hips song by Crime Mob/Lil Scrappy. It's a song about a dance-but I can see why you say that, reading the lyrcis would at first hand... but doesn't most music have the "underlying" sexual content or explicit meaning? Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Madonna...just to name a few. Why is Hip-hop being aimed at?

So will Radio One change...no. What about Satellite radio that does play the explict versions? I see where you would say it's offensive-but Imus' blunder isn't a product of the Hip-hop lyric. He was trying to be funny-and failed.

But who is playing un-censored versions?? We aren't. I am in here everyday and I don't see anything but "Clean/Radio" versions in our system.

Even our mixers all play "Clean/Radio" edits -

where are these uncensored lyrics? are they with Saddam's Weapons of Mass Distruction?

It's true that many songs have a sexual undercurrent. You could go back to the 40s and say Glen Miller's "In The Mood" has one, but there's a differnce between an undercurrent and the blatant lyrics of today. The violent nature of many hip-hop songs is a bigger problem though. Should uncensored satellite radio content be regulated? It is over the air. Those airwaves are as public as AM & FM even if you do pay for it. The same could be said for cable tv channels which are over the air before the cable system distributes them. Cable tv is almost as widespread as over the air was in the past. Kids see these extremely violent movies from an early age and assume that violence is the norm. A 17 year old was arrested today in connection with the shooting of the Kroger employee. Is it the fault of the parents? Yes, but that won't change unless society pre-qualifies potential parents. We have a better chance of cleaning up what the kids see than making sure they have better parents.

CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WWPR (POWER 105.1)/NEW YORK told THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS' DAVID HINKLEY that it's going to stop playing songs with degrading images.

My arguement is that this music is a unique one and not everyone's preception is correct.

The "Rock Your Hips" song is a dance song-and leave it at that. But yes-Hip-hop has sounded better, back before
it's current state. It had a message and now it's at a point where it needs to understand that this could be it's downfall...I don't know. I hope for the best...

I couldn't really tell you...I don't know the difference between the "explicit" and the "clean" versions of really any songs. What I know, I know from heresay.
