Will Salem surrender Expanded Band 1680? It's well beyond 5 years now.

FCC grants to the Salem Corporation and Bennett Broadcasting on a silver platter a free frequency to these guys with the stipulation they will surrender one of their 2 frequencies within 5 years after a CP is granted. The FCC granted 1680 for 1590 to Salem and 1620 for 1420 for Bennett.

Since 1997 when the Construction Permits were granted, the stations have had 10+ years to decide which frequency to surrender and which one to keep.
Salem already owns 820/1300/1360/1590 and don't forget the freebie 1680.
Bennett owns 1420/1560 and toss in the freebie 1620.

On this issue I see the FCC without a backbone, no enforcement, and not playing by it's own rules. Why would they even renew their licenses. In the meantime more paid brokered programming lines the pockets of established broadcasters who have no intent of giving up these free stations.

NO WAY! I want my party blues and oldies on 1420!

That stick up on a pile of rocks, 1KW Directional daytime, 500 watts night.

The FCC didn't grant licenses for some period after these stations were up and running. I still think the Seattle stations have been licensed for over 5 years however.

GIMMIE 1590!! SEATTLE'S TRUE AM ROCK FREQUENCY!!

My own 2c (which usually means I have to PAY people at least that to listen) is until there's a line for AM station licenses in this market, maybe not THAT big of an issue. Gut tells me the Idaho Church people are the only ones waiting for more frequencies around here to open up....

Let's just say, as much as I would hope for a new rock format on 1590, it ain't gonna happen...for now.

I don't know what KDOW does now because you can't even hear them in the predominately Spanish speaking areas of the Northwest and some of my (and many peoples) AM radios are classics that don't go up to 1680 - barely 1620 usually (which STILL makes them perfectly good locally, as it is.)

And what is with 1620? 10,000 watts should come in better even in Lynnwood than this. Hell, I get KRIZ's 1420 signal better there than anything on 1620....my truck has a VERY old AM radio (factory built original and EXTREMELY sensitive) and even though it can easily tune in 1620, it can't get KYIZ beyond the King/Snohomish County line on I-5, but it gets KRIZ 1420 AND KZIZ 1560 into South Everett before getting some splashover from KBRC 1430 and CFUN 1410 (or KRPI on 1550).

What gives? What is Chris Bennett wasting his money on? I'd be mad as hell if I were him. For a 10,000 watt power bill each month for the last 12 years, I would have expected a MUCH bigger bang for my buck than THIS. Get that stick out of Renton and put it on Vashon or somewhere decent on the Puget Sound.....
