Will Sandusky ever be a rated market?

Erie County, Ottawa County, Sandusky County and Huron County is not only home to 10,000,000 visitors during the summer, but it is also home to 241,000+ permenant souls that haunt the Northcoast of America. These four counties make up a vast chunk of land situated in North Central Ohio, yet they are forgotten by many when it comes to Radio.

If Arbitron were to rate by actual population, The Sandusky Market would sit somewhere between #163-#165. Do you think Sandusky Ohio will ever be a rated market? Does it make sense? Is there a case for this?

The stations that serve the Sandusky Market (not including Cleveland)

CLEAR CHANNEL RADIO: WLEC 1450 Nostalgia
WMJK 100.9 Classic Rock
WCPZ 102.7 Hot AC
WCKY 103.7 Country (Tiffin/Fremont)

ELYRIA LORAIN: WLKR 1510 OLDIES
WLKR 95.3 AC
WKFM 96.1 COUNTRY

BAS BROADCASTING: WOHF 92.1 CLASSIC ROCK
WFRO 99.1 AC

CHRISTIAN LIVING: WLRD 96.9 GOSPEL
WGGN 97.7 CHRISTIAN AC

CUMULUS: (Tower is in PC) WXKR 94.5 CLASSIC ROCK

What do you think?

What about Mansfield? Ashatbula?

I agree with Tony Stark, I'd like to see Mansfield rated before Sandusky.

> What do you think?

I think there is too much Classic Rock in this part of the state. You have WNCX Cleveland and WXKR Toledo available. WCPZ is doing it locally on 100.9
Does 92.1 REALLY need to be Classic Rock too?
I want "92.1 The Hits" back, complete with those 80's era jingles, and 70's era audio processing.
:)

Isn't Mansfield already rated?

Are we talking 92.1 Bellevue?
I've lost track of what they've been doing since I left there....
(I was one of the original 4 who signed it on back in the 70's)...
Bob Ladd being THE driving force...
a one man radio station...really amazing!
Was WNRR then....250 watts...
w/ a 5 bay on top of Loudy's Sports Shop on Main St!

Nope, still unrated.

Yep, that's it.

YES, that was the calls in the CHR days, could not remember.
I think it is 3,000 watts now, could be wrong.

Long ago, a friend and I dropped in on WNRR, right there in the middle of the small town of Bellevue.

If I'm remembering right, their studios and offices were in a house.

Isn't it just a matter of those markets buying Arbitron?

Everyone is entitled to my opinion.</P>

in a market that size the only benefit goes to arbitron.

although when PPM becomes a reality EVERYBODY will be a market if the advertisers like Home Depot, Wal Mart etc desire it...

I always thought that WLEC had some potential. They do a great job with high school sports and, of course, they've got the three Cleveland sports teams. I would much rather listen to at least a little local talk inside of Perry Como all day and all night. Their local news is pretty good, but it could be so much better.

More local talk (as opposed to the current zero local talk) and more local news, please!

Neither is Millersburg...of course Wooster is not rated!

In all seriousness though, let's just SUPPOSE that Wooster would get rated.
Only about 4 stations would show up! Have you ever noticed that reception SUCKS in Wooster? As soon as you come into town on Rt. 30, everything from Cleveland, Akron, and Mansfield becomes very static ridden. As soon as you go out of Wooster...loud and clear again. Wooster must be down in a valley.

Nevermind...

Honesty...

SANDUSKY MARKET would include:
ERIE COUNTY
HURON COUNTY
SANDUSKY COUNTY
OTTAWA COUNTY

MANSFIELD MARKET would include:
RICHLAND COUNTY
ASHLAND COUNTY
CRAWFORD COUNTY
(I would put Knox on here but it has a lot of Columbus in it)

WOOSTER MARKET, I just moved here from Wooster, LOL!
I think Wooster should be part of the Canton Market along with Tusc. but then again who am I to say that? That would just make WHBC and WZKL go up even more... Next time you are down that way, check out the all new WOO 91, Wooster's Sound Alternative. I enjoyed being a part of that station last year. That was my first job as a consultant (IVY LEAGUE RADIO CONSULTANTS). My hands were tied on a lot of things, but I worked with John Finn and Andrew Darnielle on giving the dying station a new image and look. It was just called "Format Free 90.9 WCWS". It now is called "WOO 91 - Wooster's Sound Alternative." They recently purchased an automation system, Jason Reed voice overs, and are renovating the studios. Kudos to the team at WCWS.

Anyhow, thats my 2 cents.

Sandusky (or any other conglomeration of counties in America) will become a rated market when and if enough stations commit to Arbitron or Eastlan to ourchase their services. Arbitron already has a National Database that allows any combination of counties to be assembled into a market area. The downside is that in some of these smaller counties there is not enough diary return to get stable information, necessitating combining counties and/or averaging surveys (which are done twice a year.) You can also get information by county (and zip code) for parts of the Sandusky and Mansfield-Ashland "markets" by using Maximiser or Tapscan software twice a year for the counties that are reflected in the Cleveland DMA and/or TSA.

no sarcasm was intended. running search on radio and records for ratings of markets, arbitron does NOT rate wooster, mansfield, ashland, mount vernon, coshocton, zanesville or cambridge--david5258

Correct...although the studios in "downtown" Bellevue....were not in a house...they were originally on the second floor of a business district store front...then years later (after a fire) the station moved across the street, to another 2nd story location. In both locations the transmitter/tower were on the roof of the studio building(s).
Some early history...
WNRR (92.1) signed on in April, '73. Original staff were 4 full timers & some part-timers mostly on weekends...all live...from about 6 AM to ~ 10 PM.
GM Bob Ladd did just about everything...including the sign-on shift, almost all sales, was chief engineer, did the talk-shows and even covered news & sports.
I left WLQR & WSPD-TV (Toledo) & was News Director & on air for 4 hrs...Kim Newsom (from WAWR, BG) & Jim Larvack (from WFRO, Fremont) rounded out the rest of the full-time sign-on staff back then.
The transmitter was a 1949ish 250 watt GE that Bob found in a barn and restored...was fed into the 5 Bay on the roof for an ERP of 1.1 kw @ 125 ft.
Bob built the whole place for a song...
and then played lots of them!
He's still working in radio...in S/W Florida!

The CC cluster does NOT need Arbitron to sell their cluster of stations - it would just be a huge expense for mainly...them.
