Will satellite dishes have to "go around back" in Boston?

The Boston City Council, citing a proliferation of satellite television dishes across the city, is considering banning the devices from the front of buildings.

Saying that the dishes are potentially dangerous and increasingly hard to overlook in parts of the city where some buildings are festooned with them, councilors plan to consider a measure to confine the satellite television receivers to the back of buildings, out of public view.

This is silly. Didn't these political hacks ever think the sat dishes are where they are for a freakin' reason? I doubt the stations put them where they did just for the hell of it and/or for decorations. God, I can't stand stupid people, especially stupid politicians.

This one ain't gonna fly. First, it's a ploy by the cable companies, particularly Comcast, to shoot down a competitor. It's well known in Boston's poorer neighborhoods that the cable folks report each and every satellite antenna they see to the city's code inspectors, whether or not they're in compliance with existing rules. So what the city council is proposing will simply legalize cable's harassment of satellite TV companies. Second, federal law for the most part preempts local laws regulating the placement of receiving antennas.

Well they are a bit unsightly, but I don't think they should be banned from the front of buildings.

By the way, can anyone answer me this. Why are the dishes always on the side of apartment and condo buildings, never on the roof? Is it because of the wiring? I know someone that lives on the top floor, and they won't allow her to have a dish on the roof. Is there a reason why it's never allowed?

There are a few regulations on where you can put the dish. The FCC allows dishes but you can't just put them anywhere.

Landlords and condo associations are not dumb either. Sure you could complain to the FCC that the law is being violated. Just see how fast 6 months later when your lease is not renewed. Or the Condo association starts making you obey every single rule to the letter. They can make is so bad you'd move. In reality it isn't worth it.

Generally dishes may not be put in common areas of condo associations or apt complexes. You obviously can't put them on a fire escape (it would be against the fire code), so the easiest place to put them is on the side of the building.

I for one would rather have cell phones banned on busses and leave the dishes alone.. LOL
