Will SMOOTH JAZZ make an INDY comeback ?

Were my sources correct? Carl Frye, former PD at WYJZ-Smooth Jazz 100.1FM, hires on at Cumulus Indy? Does that mean 93.9FM will make the switch to some sort of Smooth Jazz after the Christmas dust has settled? Maybe that is the unique position they have sought - and, failed to find - for that frequency.

Or "Smooth AC"? Maybe still under the WARM brand?

If they are looking for a Jazz/AC Hybrid format, they should hire Gary Havens. He was responsible for the Lite Rock/Night Breeze format at 107.9.

If they're going to try Smooth Jazz, they shouldn't hire Carl Frye. They should get somebody who actually knows how to program a radio station.

Hybrids don't work all that well these days. They need to decide what they are and stick to whatever that is. Smooth jazz would give them better numbers that what they've been doing. Carl Fry was The Hawk on 96.3. Maybe they'll go hip hop.

In a word:

No.

Don't expect any significant changes to 93-9 for the new year.

based on today's trends a number 9 touchtone played continously would garner more ratings than what 93.9 is currently running.

Call letter suggstions for smooth jazz? WSMJ or WYJZ. Both available. Hey Carl!

Carl did hip hop but was the guy who put the nuts and bolts of the smooth jazz format together on WYJZ.

Former negative posts aside, Carl had a positive attitude ALWAYS. Worked miracles with absolutely no budget.

Say for a minute he had no idea (which I disagree with) then he did a great job for someone with no abilities. In the days of everyone whining and griping about people on this board you can't find a single person who worked with Carl who can lay some crap on Carl. He was decent with people, and more than decent usually, and the kind of person you would want to be your boss.

We worked for the same station. Disagreements? yes. Always looking to "get the job done" with as little pain as possible for all involved. Can't say enough good about him especially in today's radio.

Maybe he'll take a format similar to Now and Hoosier and pull the middle out of the two Radio Yawn stations.

They have successfully dis integrated the audience. Formerly a large white and black audience. White people really don't want to hear about how they are whitey or "the man" all the time. Now and hoosier both suffer with the white audience. Their former half and half staff suffered too because they didn't want whitey (white staff) at remotes.

Cumulus still has a great sales staff and can outsell Radio Yawn because the agencies admittedly don't buy black. Make of this what you want but it is true.

Idea for Buckwheat. Imagine the old Hoosier churban format on 104.5? Move the oldies to 93.9.

Shirk's old hole is still open and immediate draw. (format hole, I had to say it). And none of the Radio Yawn stations has a solid signal at Geist or in Greenwood or Carmel. And with the turnover you can rehire the whole original staff. Ann is available, Wheeler, Hawk, Fabio, Toney Lamont, and others.

A 6 in two books, easy. Oh, and I have the music still on hard drive Carl.
