Don't forget WRKO...they knocked WBZ off the the top in their first book, and out of the format in less than a year. 'RKO ruled the market until FM took over in the mid 70s.

Thanks for the laugh Kevin. You and Cat can say what ever
you want about me. I have strong sholders and can carry the
weight and I figure if you're talking about me, you're
leaving someone else alone.

You might as well know a couple of things about me Kev,
1. I'm going to tell the truth like it or not.
2. I'm going to tell it like I see it, like it or not.
3. I don't tolerate morons very well.
4. If I don't like someone I won't be two faced about it.

I can tell the truth and how I see things because I don't
have to worry about keeping my GM happy so I can collect
my paycheck. No paycheck no worry about the next bill.
So when CC, CBS, Salem or who ever does something, I can
talk about it truthfully.
I don't need to hide who I am and that's why with the
exception of one message, my info is at the bottom of my
posts.

Cat's comment about High school is because I am a DJ at a
small station that is located at one of our local high
schools. But like I've told him before, at least I am on
the air at a real radio station which is more than I can
say for him.

I freely admit Kev, I don't like Cat and have a very low
opinion of him and I won't just stand around twiddling my
thumbs when he opens his mouth and stupidity comes out.
Oh and you had better look closer. I'm not trying to create
trouble, I was just responding to Cat causing trouble.

I get tired of the "I've been in the business 30 years and
know everything" attitude. It's bull. To all those who pull
that crap I say, then why have so many of you left the
business? why aren't you large and in charge? why don't you
own some stations? why aren't you rich? what have you done
to improve the business? And most importantly, if you've
been in the business so long and know everything why is it
in such a mess?

And as for growing up, I did that at 17 when I joined the
navy and went to boot camp, that is a quick and rude wake
up call.

The original "race station" (and that is what they called it in their own ads in the early 50´s). It was heavy on block programming. too.

KQUE was the real challenger, even with KILT on.

On frequent visits to Santa Fe I always looked forward to their excellent mix of oldies.

BUFFALO,NY Legendary Stations

The Hound Dog.....George Lorenz....was on WKBW.....1520....he later

went on the found WBLK.................

1520 is still rocking with the oldies...now the call letters are wwkb.....

but they still use all the old jingle packages....and Danny Neaverth is on

on 1400 especially from 1966 until the mid 70's.....WYSL gave kb a run for their money........WYSL was a McLendon Station......and Gordon McLendon is one
of many given credit for the top 40 format

WYSL - FM created a stir in the late 60's with their teen dj's..
this was a 50kw fm practically handed over to 2 teenagers to program

I remember listening to them when I was in the Army stationed at Ft. Knox about 30 miles southeast of Louisville.
I remember 790 (?) WAKY with 5,000 watts daytime and WKLO 1080 10,000 watts daytime had equal signals in the daytime. When WKLO reduced at sunset to 1,000 watts they were weaker with some QRM but still listenable. WAKY was another story. At sunset they reduced and disappeared reception-wise.
I just checked the other day at radio-locator.com and looked at 790's night pattern with a null directly at Ft Knox and now I understand why they disappeared!

In the nineties Larry Neal played the whole top 40 of the week from a year in past on Saturday mornings on KOMA. He used the WKY surveys for his countdown but he did not publicize that.<P ID="signature">______________

I always thought of WBZ as a Middle Of The Road (MOR) station. I know it was Top 40 but not that long. Top 40 in Boston was WRKO and WMEX. A great rivalry.

I also think of KDKA Pittsburgh as mainly MOR though it had a Top 40 period in its history.

I enjoy this thread. I do not remember any mention of DC. I always thought of Top 40 in DC being superior to Top 40 in Baltimore.

WEAM at 1390 and WEEL at 1310. BOth were in Virginia and had crappy signals at night. Also WINX in Maryland

KAKC was one, Drake cousulted for a while, PD was Scooter Seagraves.

That was Ontario, CA. Burbank was 1490 and moved to 1500.

The FM did not upgrade and launch as an AM substitute until 1970. The main Top 40 earlier was WEAM.

Annapolis on 1190 was R&B.
