Will The Big Talker Survive?

"Will The Big Talker Survive?"

Not with the current programming strategy. How's that for a sound and honest answer?

So how would you change it, dump Rush or Bortz?

Both and then introduce the market to either a true CHR or Classic Rock format.

Am I the only one who can connect the dots? Citadel is going to cut loose 100.3. Citadel canned Ed Brantley. If I was “stuck” with 100.3 who do you think I would be calling! Of course you would half to build new studios (I personally have built a studio in 5 days) and wait out any non compete.

We heard you the first time.

New studios, hiring a sales, programming and administrative staff and starting from ground zero. Yes, that signal could get a 5 share running sweep tones but taking over the operation after just cashing checks for 16 years is going to take some doing if indeed things play out that way.

I bet if the shed the local talk shows they would be on the money saving path. Does HHH still have a contract or are all contracts tossed now that the court is running the chain?

Did u kids read where The Large Talker is 2+months behind on their LMA payments? Not good. If HHH was tossed where would he go, for that matter where would Phil go? I really don't think Knoxpatch could stand being without Rush.

They would probably sit on their couches and cash checks since the smart money says they must both have contracts and non-compete clauses.

Since I think Knoxville already has to much crappy pop music... just wanted to know what you meant by a "True CHR"? Also, why would the turn that huge signal in a format that targets a 18-34 demo when 25-49 and 25-54 are the money demos? If you have that great signal, why not go where the real money is? But please give me examples of artists or songs that 102.1 or 104.5 don't already play. If you're talking about an Adult CHR... then please give examles of music not played by 102.1 or 97.5 or 106.1? Thanks.

Maybe Horne Radio could buy 100.3, move WFIV over there, and I-105 could be I-100.

... but don't hold your breath. ;D

I think what he means is a true, current intensive mainstream CHR (like most of the Clear Channel CHR's). While Star 102.1 is a mainstream CHR, they tend to be adult leaning and play way more gold and recurrent titles mixed in than a lot of CHR's. (mainly because they also have rhythmic CHR sister "Hot 104.5" on the younger end). But it would be nice to have a true, 18-34 targeted mainstream CHR that was younger leaning. In other words, fewer gold and recurrents with a tighter playlist that rotates mostly currents and recent recurrents at a much higher frequency. For a good example, listen just down the road to Chattanooga's two mainstream CHRs (WDOD "96.5 The Mountain" and WKXJ "103.7 Kiss FM"). Both are much better mainstream CHR's than Star 102.1, and don't lean in an adult direction. (In other words, they add new music faster, don't play a bunch of Hot AC type gold, and also don't do stupid things like play versions of hit songs with hip hop portions edited out (like Star does with the new Taio Cruz/Ludacris song and others). ::) I could maybe understand that type of thing 15 years ago, but everyone 40 and under today has grown up with hip hop and it isn't a turnoff as it was with older audiences 15 or 20 yrs ago.

Anyway, Clear Channel's formulaic CHR's may be very cookie cutter in presentation, but musically, they are definitely better than Star's adult leaning approach. I'd actually love to see Citadel sell out of the market and Clear Channel come in. I know everyone slams CC for their voicetracking, etc., but they do program a lot of formats that I currently like (young leaning mainstream CHR, Rhythmic AC, and the new Gen. X/90s format to name a few). I would love to see any of those in Knoxville. But definitely count me in as one who would love to see another mainstream CHR to take on Star 102.1. CHR is one of the hottest formats at the moment and many markets now have 2 CHRs (Chat. and Tri Cities both do), and I'd love to see a good CHR battle in Knoxville.

Also, as the demos have changed over the past few years, you now see lots of 30 and 40 something people still listening to young leaning CHR music. So it isn't just teens and 20 somethings now. This is a trend that seems different to me than it did 20 years ago when more people moved on to AC, Classic Rock, Oldies, etc. Hey, no one wants to grow old anymore 8). Heck, I'm 40 myself, and mainstream CHR is still my favorite format (always has been, always will.) I'll still by listening to CHR when I'm 60 if I make it. I just don't see how people can get stuck on one time period of music and listen to it for the rest of their lives. I'd go nuts if I had to listen to classic rock or oldies day in and out for years and years. I grew up on 80's CHR as a teen, and it's still fun to listen to occasionally, but I could never see myself listening to it all the time and hearing the same songs over and over, day after day. I gotta' have new music, and I like to keep up with what's going on in pop culture/entertainment, etc.

Very good post. Thanks!

I still think everthing you say you want is coverd on 102.1 or 104.5 or 94.9 but I am not a pop music fan so I'll let others weigh in.

This I do know... in Knoxville, Pop music is NOT where the money is at. There is no way any radio owner is going to take a 100,000 watt radio station in a market with hardly any other 100k'ers and try to split up the money of the oversaturated and under funded 18-34 demo. We'll see what happens.

Why not target those demos? Those demos are worth roughly 6 million dollars in the Knoxville market, and there might even be more dollars out there for a format that actually delivers some results. Star and Hot can't really compete with each other, since they are under the same corporate umbrella. The River can't compete because, well, because they are a non-factor in the market. Jack can't compete because they just don't fit with the Knoxville mind set.

Whatever format is placed on WNOX will be a competitive format. They have the dollars for promotion, the signal for market penetration and the history of success with not only CHR but also country and rock.

The bottom line is that they are local boys who have been doing this for decades. They know the market and they know radio. They're not going to answer to a consultant in Syracuse on what works in Boise.

You actually know they are ready to repo WNOX and start operating it tomorrow morning or is it wishful thinking?

I don't know if they are going to "repo" the station, but considering that Citadel is going through Chapter 11 I would say they are gearing up for any situation that comes up.

Don't think I'll play the game.

Not that I don't have any imagination....

I just don't think anything is going to happen.

Citidel will emergy from bankruptcy with all its stations in tact, nobody is going to be sold, the Pirkle's will go on doing exactly what they're doing right now (which is nothing), and all of us will have just wasted tons of time we'll never, ever get back.

Time we could have spent, on something else... make that ANYTHING else..

Y'all have fun, though.
