Will the last PD please turn out the lights on your way out

Jay Shannon is out at IHM Dallas, being the last local PD, and now all stations are programmed remotely.

how things have changed. I remember working briefly at the I-heart building back when it was Clear channel. Full staff, amazing view awesome studios.

They've been letting a LOT of PD's and OM's go lately. If you're an OM in the building with seven stations and literally 5 people on the staff, you can and will still be let go. Take iHeart in Toledo, OH who fired Scott Sands recently. That was the case. Owning a radio station is like having a podcast now. 1 person can run it, and it likely isn't getting too much attention. lol.

Ahhh radio.

i wonder which major radio company is gonna go full "national automated network of stations with VO jocks/syndicated programming" and music programed from the company's HQ" and ditch everything local and opt for the EAS being the only thing that's local. i'm sure this is normal for medium or small markets but sooner or later the biggest markets will be run like that with the way the industry's going."

i wouldn't be surprised if iHeartMedia does it first.

Audacy tried it, sort of, with some of their alternative stations a few years ago. I don’t think it was much of a success overall.

They did it with both alternative & country during the pandemic:

It really hurt alternative a lot, especially at KVIL, and led to the end of Mike Kaplan. That led to the hiring of John Allers and the rest is history.

I think all the companies are doing some version of that. I'd imagine in the next 2 years, all the companies are fully automated with the exception of a morning show here and there - and even then, that show will likely be on several regional stations. Local is over for radio. The math doesn't make sense. Would I love to go back to 20/30 years ago when radio was flourishing and their were people in the halls - GOD - of course. I'm an old head at this point, but you can't hang on to that time. There are podcasts getting more listens and views than every news network put together - and most of them are sitting there smoking weed and telling dick jokes.

Wow, is this THE Brett Blankenship? The Engineer who single-handedly bungled Cumulus' move to Victory Park on a level never before seen in radio?
