Will the NBA return to NBC?

Stories I'm reading indicate that TNT (WBD) couldn't match the Amazon part of the deal, another indication of the trouble traditional media are in when they compete with Amazon. Why would TNT and the NBA settle just so a highlights show can continue? Or should I say, why would TNT be interested in continuing "Inside the NBA" when it no longer has rights to carry games? Remember when ESPN lost NASCAR? It was like NASCAR didn't exist if you were watching ESPN.

Most people would rather watch Inside than the games themselves.

NBA TV might be out up for sale after WBD lost it TV rights to the NBA after next season.
 
TNT has a solid case. Why else would the nba make sure that now, all contracts don’t include matching rights? The nba is butthurt over Zaslav’s silly “we don’t have to have the nba” comment.

I'm not sure about the strength of the case, but it's obvious that the NBA is bullish on the potential of its partnerships with NBC and Amazon. A court decision forcing the league to take TNT back (either at the expense of Amazon or as a fourth partner) would create an uncomfortable, toxic situation. Throwing money at the problem to make it go away is the best solution. WBD can bid next time around, assuming TV as we know it still exists by then. It could be that by the end of the deal, most Americans (Americans rich enough to matter to advertisers, that is) will be consuming media on an a-la-carte basis, paying monthly fees to an array of entities for only the information, sports and entertainment they want to watch.
