Will We See An Earlier Flip To Christmas Music This Year In The Boston Market?

106.7 Flipped at 5:04. This station seems to enjoy flipping at 5pm Eastern Time the Friday before Thanksgiving.

Just this year, other area stations flipped earlier so that did give some earlier competition for the Christmas Music, especially for the suburban areas that can get nearby market stations, but still will enjoy the holiday music well for the Boston Area (or at least the Downtown parts)

Odd goings-on at WMAS Springfield. The website has been all decked out in red and green since Thursday, but the music is still 100 percent AC (Michael Jackson's "PYT" now playing). Hartford's WRCH (now playing Journey's "Don't Stop Believing") gives no hint of an imminent flip, either on air on or on its website. Is it foggy between Boston and western New England? Santa seems to have lost his way! Help, Rudolph!

I think that it was wise for Magic to flipped yesterday. It just seems timely, and not too soon at all either.

Where can you pick up station from?
It’s the FM translator for WMRC Milford. I was able to pick the station up on a good portion of the lower end of 495 when I used to commute to work in Franklin.

And I don’t recall the station flipping to all Christmas in the past. Could a format flip be in the works?

I’m pretty sure they’ve flipped to Christmas before. They even play Irish music every St. Patrick’s Day. I doubt they would be doing a format flip. I remember April Fool’s Day this year they flipped to country, and I actually did fall for it for a little bit.

They typically flip on a Friday before Thanksgiving. Last year was an exception due to COVID when they flipped a week earlier.

It's probably because we haven't had much of any snow here in Boston. I remember when WVBF-FM played a flurry of winter songs during the blizzard of January 20th., 1978. 2 days earlier, a foot of snow had been predicted for Boston, but the storm moved inland and changed the snow to rain. We dodged a bullet that day, but two days later, we were hit with a bomb!

Has "The Christmas Shoes" fallen out of favor this year ?

Thankfully I have not heard it when tuning in to any Christmas music station.

I have mostly been only hearing traditional Christmas music, whether I overhear WMJX or on Tune=In's Holiday Music Channel.

Does anyone actually in radio micromanage Christmas playlists to the extent that snow songs don't get played before the season's first local snowfall, or that all "non-traditional" titles are abruptly deleted after years of playing them?

Good question. I also wonder (and could use BDS to check if I really, truly cared) if stations in the South and Southwest perhaps play less of the "Baby It's Cold Outside" and "Let it Snow" titles and more of the less weather based ones.

Of course, the Hallmark Channel movies all seem to be filmed someplace like northern Manitoba or Alaska or they get a discount on fake snow machines....

Come on, everybody is dreaming of a white Christmas!

Now, I thought that Baby, It's Cold Outside has been omitted from playlists for being deemed politically incorrect?

That started in 2019, the year of #MeToo, didn't it? I don't listen to enough Christmas radio (I do listen to SiriusXM's classical/choral Holiday Pops channel, but songs like that are never played there.) to know if the song was allowed back last year or not, or whether it's being played this year.

Yes, I am only hearing what is being put over the intercom at restaurants myself.
