will WEEI implode

The mid day guys were so busy patting themselves on the back and gushing over how wonderful their show is I was wondering if Shirley MacLaine and Lily Tomlin had taken over Sports Radio, then Ordway "The King Of All Boston Media" was his obnoxious self:

a)Could WEEI get these huge numbers without the Sox and Patriots?

b)Eddy & Neumy sounds like a fun show idea

c)What will happen to 1510 AM?

But the more pressing question - will people tire of the WEEI banter?

David Lee Roth and Jay Severin are not the solution to take numbers away from this new monolith. Create a vacuum and even bad radio is going to get attention.

And how will Ted Sarandis (or the exile of Ted nation) fit into the equation?

You mean without Pats _talk_ of course, as the Pats themselves are on 'BCN...
But yes, they do benefit in the success of both teams. (And, sad to say,
the Red Sox reign as champions will officially end in a week or so, with
ChiSox or Astros becoming the new World Champs)

Depends on the financial solvency of Sporting News Radio and the local
ratings/ad sales; if they find listeners migrating to ESPN 890/1400
then expect Country Oldies 1510; La Mega 1510; Air America 1510, whatever.

The ratings so far haven't suggested it.

I think with Mike Adams the ratings may even go UP at night.

I mean the Patriots and Sox just being in this market, whether or not they broadcast their games on the station.

Yes, I agree, Mike Adams can probably top Ted Nation for two reasons:

a)Ted wore out his welcome
b)Ted's mixture of right-wing whacko politics and sports was a huge detriment
and turned people off. So much for the "marketplace" wanting "conservative"
talk on a sports station.

Blame Democrat Ed Markey for the Telecommunications act. IF radio was not owned by a few, you would have healthy alternatives. Ted Sarandis so badly fumbled the ball - going from a great sports talk host to a man losing it,
yelling over the callers, sounding like he was in quicksand - he should've taken the 1510 bucks and faded off into the sunset richer.

A few points.

WEEI-FM in Providence doesnt even air any local sports (Red Sox, Patriots, etc), yet they have been pretty strong in the ratings.

Listeners aren't going to ESPN Boston because no one knows it exists and The Zone, like ESPN, you cannot get a clear reception for.

And Mike Adams = Higher Ratings. Ted turned alot of listeners off. Fun talkers until Ted, a wet towel of sorts. Mike is the man...John Wallach is great but I don't think he is ready for primetime yet. Maybe Mike and John? Who knows.

Some people know it exists--people are calling up the Felger show, and some
may have found them because they've been running the baseball playoffs...
whether they stay as listeners is another question. They may prefer WEEI's local talk
to the (mostly) satellite sports talk via ESPN, plus Premiere's Jim Rome.
But yes, 890,1400, AND 1510 all have reception "issues".

WEEI-FM gets the Sox next year.

Eddie Andelman and Bob Neumeier? Uh-uh... seriously, it's time for Eddie to retire. On the rare occasions I flip to his show (during a break on another station)it's embarrassing... his guest co-hosts are abysmal. His heyday was 30 years ago.

I don't like all the programming on WEEI and listen less but they're not going anywhere.

It's too easy to compete against the Score. Have you ever listened
to a more crappier sports station? WEEI is so much superior quality-wise.
Score is busch league radio.

People know it exists but you're right on the money about the
signal. If it's too much hassle to pick it up, they'll tune back t
to 850. 890 can't support a mass format like sports talk. They'll
run out of money in a year. Two max.

Mike Adams is a baseball nut. Right now, it's a good fit with
their all-Sox allignment. He's very surfacy at best on other sports, in
my sports opinion.

Why would you think they would implode? they're strong so far. You dont strike anyone as a sports fan so why are you listening?. Bravado is a huge part of macho, heterosexual, sports culture, have one of your friends explain it to you. So it's no surprise that they would be patting themselves on the back, I take it by your Shirley Mclaine/Lilly Tomlin reference that you are not a regular at heterosexual....ER,..... STRAIGHT guy pursuits, so just an explaination for you.

> a)Could WEEI get these huge numbers without the Sox and

With the Sox winning it all last year and the Pats winning Super Bowls, sports has been a hot topic around this area and WEEI has benefited. They've done a great job branding their station during this run so even if the local teams don't do so well in the future, the station will be fine. WEEI is out-performing where they should be due to all the winning and interest, but even if the station comes down to earth, lets say drops a share or a share and a half 12+, they'll still be making plenty of money.

> b)Eddy & Neumy sounds like a fun show idea

In a bizarro world. Neumy won't go to a sinking ship like 1510 and no one else wants Eddie. Once Paul Allen tires of losing money with the Zone, he'll deal that albatross to some sucker who'll put brokered religion or foreign language programming on it. That should mean the end of the Eddie Andleman era in Boston radio. Neumy seems to be happy doing the occasional cable and CBS-4 sports drop-ins and calling the ponies and Olympics. I can't see him going back to day-to-day radio.

> But the more pressing question - will people tire of the

WEEI has to be careful not to let the formula get too stale. They've freshened up middays with the addition of Michael Holley. Getting rid of Sarandis was long overdue and if Adams gets the slot he'll fit right in. With Stern going to Sirius soon, Dennis and Callahan should benefit. Look for even more non-sports talk in the morning starting in January. With Ordway constantly bringing in different co-hosts each day, it helps that program from getting into a rut. WEEI so far has been able to do what WRKO hasn't--make changes to keep the brand fresh without alienating listeners.

Dale and Holley....BORING!

Couldn't disagree more.
Adding a boring Michael Holley to a bland Dale Arnold makes
the midday show a snooze-a-thon for me.
Neumy was the one who brought fire and energy to the Dale
and Neumy midday show.
His leaving only to be replaced by Holley makes the WEEI midday
show the most passionless and bland co-hosted radio show I've
ever heard.
I even find the weekend combo of Mustard and Johnson far more
entertaining than these two.
Boooooring!!

Wow - where's Cab Radio when we need him?

This Frish fellow obviously has a crush - or is envious - of people.
