Will WIST Flip to Oldies?

I'm chuckling to myself as I write this, knowing GTGO will get so excited he might wet his pants. But, there is a chance that WIST could go Oldies if this Hispanic thing doesn't work out. Not sure how long Senor Sanchez will give LaRaza to make it, but in this economy 1st Quarter might make him cry uncle. If the station reverts back to the actual owner, he just might decide to do Oldies. Anyone else have any insight?

I don't think that will happen, although i'm sure listeners in the Triad would like to see the "Country Legends"
return.

This is FANTASTIC News!!!!! I do think that WIST-FM 98.3 needs to switch to Oldies!!! If done right, (with a good large playlist and live, local D.J.`s) the station could be a big hit!!! As far as Country Legends in the Triad go, that is now being done by WBRF-FM 98.1. Bring on the Oldies to WIST-FM 98.3. Now, it is really hurting that station that most folks can`t even understand what is being said on there. I bet their revenues now are in the toliet!!!

;D Hahah .. is Wes Jones working anywhere?

So far they are meeting their sales forecast. I don't see "la raza" flipping anytime soon.

:-\

It makes common sense to switch to Oldies. They are currently running a format where about 98% of the population can`t even understand the language! They are catering to a very SMALL market, now. Besides there are many AM Spanish stations. 94.1 failed with the Spanish format and switched to (American-English) talk this year.

94.5 didn't really fail, it just didn't do what Clear Channel thought it would do. The station has flipped four times since 01'.

Also 98% of the population can't understand Spanish? You really must be up there if you think there aren't Spanish people in the Triad. WPTI is running at basically a wash ratings wise from what it was when it was a Spanish station.

GTGO, get Satellite Radio, PLENNNNNNNNNNTY of oldies to listen to.

Hi - gotta chime in .... nearly 8% of the Market is Spanish now ....La Presciosa had 3x the audience of LaRaza and La Preciosa was billing about $120K a month .... WIST doesn't report to Miller-Kaplan so don't really know about billing...... once a market crosses a 7% Hispanic threshold there are targeted ad campaigns w/ lots of Jackson ( Bud - BK - McD's) somebody needs to stay Spanish to get the $$$$...... CC was DUMB to bring a 3rd news talk format into this market (we "ain't" that smart ... for 3.... can I get an Amen , only 26% of the market has a college ed).... if they wanted to make $$$ they should have kept playin' La Cucharacha

I disagree with the 7% numbers. Those seem way too high to me. But, it depends excatly how many miles you are including into the "Market". Are you including Raleigh? Or just the Triad? If you factor in the ENTIRE listening area (like Mount Airy and Galax/Virginia) those numbers will be much lower. I agree that we need Spanish stations. However, there are many located on the AM dial. As far as Oldies station in the TRIAD, we have none! It is a format that we do need in some form. WIST-FM 98.3 had the Country Legends format and wasn`t very good at it. The station had a very small playlist and many repeats. It sounded VERY automated most of the time. That is one reason why it failed. If WIST-FM does go to Oldies, they need a LARGE playlist and live, LOCAL folks interacting with the listeners. Done right, it could make some good $$$$.

I did enjoy listening to La Cucaracha. ;D

Someone in another thread mentioned that WUNC and WFDD have little ratings to speak of in the Triad. The answer to why is in this this thread... 26% college education rate... 8% hispanic... news/talk in general rated like crap. It isn't rocket science.

The Triad is like a metropolitan version of eastern NC. Hmm... I'm not sure who I insulted more by saying that.

WIST-FM will never do better with ANY format as long as they are totally automated or play the same 100 songs over and over again like they did when they had the Country format. The station could find innovative, inexpensive ways to get out more into the local communities.....

What is the local history of WIST-FM? Was it Country years ago?

I recently talked to some ex-Clear Channel folks who really didn't understand the switch from La Preciosa to RushRadio. They said the hispanic format had been great for them and that the Hispanic people had really embraced the station. They were making money. Sounds like just another bonehead CC move to me.

I also knew some folks at WIST and the station's signal was just so small that they really couldn't afford a full staff, GTGO. It costs a LOT of money to fully staff a radio station, provide insurance, etc. You need a lot of money coming in and they were unable to get much agency business with that signal. I do think it could have sounded more live and local and not so automated. Sometimes the mistakes announcers make gives the station more of a live, local sound and I think people see it as more "real". All this voice-tracking crap is not good for radio.

Clear Channel probably looked it as their best way to get Rush Radio into the market and increase that brand while making the fewer number of people mad. They seem to favor the brands like that, and don't mind taking a long-term hit by ruining a heritage brand that's not theirs (like WFMX) if they can save some short-term money, which seems backwards to everyone but a bean counter.
